Default Attention to Popular Communications July 2005

I was browsing through the book store today and happened to pick up this month's issue of Popular Communications and found two interesting articles I wanted to bring to everyone's attention...

The first which happens to be headlined on the cover is "Is it safe to use that mobile rig?" At first I thought maybe the article was going to be on some form of RF radiation, but then got to the article and quickly realized it was a battle for the right to use. It seems a police department in a specific city has been cracking down hard on HAMS and even volunteer firefighters for having radio equipment which can "scan" and go into the police band. Let's forget about the FCC policy that excludes licensed hams from these damn scanner laws, no, people have had their gear taken away from them and or worse.

It's an interesting article, and everyone should take some time to go read it. The other one was more of a product review but focused on easily programming your Radio Shack PRO-96 Digital scanner. So for those PRO-96 owners out there, this month's issue of popcomm has a great article on programming it with ease.

Hi all,

Leave it to Pop Com or ANY mag to be MONTHS behind the news due to the slowness of getting it into print. I would say that this and any related articles are MUST READ for those who think they won't get busted. While some places like Podunk IA may not care, Rochester NY is like a pit bull, bites and hangs on and they're not the only one, just the worst.

NOW maybe I won't get pooh poohed when I tell you about such things?

No, Warren, you'll just get told that someone in one of those jurisdictions ought to get an injunction issued against their local police department.

Too bad the HAM community isn't left wing enough to have the ACLU take up the fight....

Too bad the ACLU isn't moderate enough to take on a case that doesn't further their socialist agenda.

And seeing the direction this topic is going, perhaps it should be moved to the Tavern, where it probably should have been in the first place.

To bad everytime I send in my dues to the ACLU they get my mailing address wrong. It takes about a year to get them to change it and by then it's renewal time and they screw it up again.
Regarding the July 2005 Pop Comm, be sure to check out the REACT in Action section. Our local Team, SELA REACT, got a mention.
