Pro-96 1.3 Upgrade - myths removed.

Sorry to start a nother thread about this but I just got off the phone with the technichian that will be doing your scanner upgrade. Nothing like going to the source.

First off ANY Pro-96 scanner that is stamped Radio Shack and has a Radio Shack catalog number on it will be upgraded. No questions.

The firmware upgrade involves a ROM upgrade + a Processor upgrade. The upgrade includes 1.0, 1.2 & 1.3 versions in one upgrade.

To display your firmware version is press #3 while the initial display is being displayed. Any scanner not displaying 1.3 should be upgraded.

Turn around time should be 1 day in the repair facility plus whatever for shipping. The technician states that he has everything he needs to do the upgrade however has only done a few upgrades.

Yes, the scanner MUST be sent to Fort Worth Texas.

Thanks again for being right on the money. I only wish the local RS employees/managers were as knowledgeable and helpfull. I just bought a Po-96 on Wednesday and the scanners with 1.3 are not in stores yet. I just checked mine and it has CPU: F1.1. I will get it in for the upgrade soon. Hopefully they won't ask too many questions and will have some clue about what I need done.

Since you clearly have the inside scoop....any updates on store delivery dates for the new GRE digital mobile unit - beyond what we've already gathered from previous postings?

I'll ask but I doubt that any of the numbers anyone will give me will yeild much success. I will try though.

Back up your scanner BEFORE you send it in. Use Win96 >>>> CLICK HERE <<<<

Get a scanner programming cable from >>>> Black Bag Software <<<< or from >>>> Radio Shack Corporation #200-0289 <<<<.

I use the same cable for my Pro-96 , Alinco DJ-x2000, and Icom IC-T90
I have to use adapters for the radio side such as Stereo to Mono adapter.

Hey Pro-95. We got a few more Pro 96 in this week, and thy had the 1.3 upgrade in them!! It doesn't apply to us in Omaha, but if you need one, I'd be willing to trade your store for a 1.2 since that's all we need here for now. Also, if anyone on here is interested, we still have the $75 coupon, and have the 1.3's in the store. Pro-95, my store number is 8519, and my name is Ross if you want to talk.

I bought my Pro-96 online through the Radio Shack website and can't for the life of me locate the invoice that came with it. Do you still think I'd be able to get it upgraded?

I'm fairly confident that most RS stores will send it in for the upgrade with no problem. The scanner is less than a year old so is under warranty. On the off chance that they refuse, just find another close by. Then let all your friends know about the bad Customer Service you got from that perticular store.

It took me three stores, but I finally found one that would send it in for me with no questions asked other than "Is it in warranty?".

We'll see how long it takes to come back now. I miss it already

Take it to the Shack and tell them it has to be sent to the Fort Worth Center for In warranty CPU 1.3 firmware upgrade.

Thanks for the thought Rob. I was just thinking grousing a little about where I am right now. I do miss Houston. I was also a little worried about mickey60's story of using 3 stores before he got one to accept it. If it takes me three stores it will be an overnight trip somewhere. :shock:

I am heading out tomorrow to Watertown, SD to see what goes.
