Use it on a licensed frequency that allows data transmission.

The GPS speaker microphone does not need FCC approval.

I think what you are referring to is if a co-channel user experiences harmful interference caused by GPS speaker microphone transmissions, they can report the interference to the FCC. You don’t want to get to this point.

Before the GPS speaker microphone is used, I would recommend the rescue squad agency draft a MOU and send it to all co-channel users that would hear the GPS speaker microphone audible data bursts under normal conditions.

Once all co-channel user’s sign off on the MOU, the rescue squad needs to make certain that its Radio Station License reflects the GPS speaker microphone’s type of data emission.

This type of add on device needs to be wired and configured properly, especially when it shares a voice frequency.

No, but its use does.

I believe that location data was allowed on GPRS by a waiver filed by Garmin.
This would NOT create a general allowance of data on GMRS channels.

As I understand it, currently without a waiver, data communications are not allowed on GMRS, therefore its use on a GMRS radio would be against FCC rules.
