If your talking portable to portable than its gonna be about a 1/2 mile to a mile, maybe a little more but not by much.

If your talking portable to base then perhaps a bit more depending on the base power out and antenna variables.

Your mileage may vary.....

perhaps - too many variables for anyone to predict with accuracy.

I live in Ocean County as well, and given the terrain and foliage in the area, I have used UHF at about 2 miles max with 2 GP300 UHF radios with whip antennas. On a side note, I've gotten up to 3 1/2 to 4 miles on VHF portable to mobile in the woods of Southern Ocean County.

It's hard to say exactly what distance you get. The antennas you use, battery capacity and power, how you hold the radio, and where you are are all variables. Open area with no obstructions will give you the maximum range, which could be anywhere from 2 miles to 5. Individual results may vary.
