License Question
Can a business be licensed for GMRS. I think I saw some in the FCC database.

No. Only individuals. No companies or corporations.

You can use GMRS radios for your business, provided each user with a radio obtains their own personal GMRS license in their name. Business use is not promoted, but it is not illegal. Or go the easier route and use FRS radios, that require no license. Unless you intend to use a repeater with the GMRS radios, you won't gain much distance running simplex over FRS.

There are several GMRS repeaters in my area that are used for commercial purposes. One is used for a construction company and the other is security at park or campground in the area. I hear them regularly.

Are they licensed?
Are they grandfathered?
Are they only "family":?
or,
Are they illegal?

Back in the 80's, one of the EMS that I worked for was licensed for GMRS. MARTA (the Metro Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority - local government transit) is still licensed as KAB0382 GMRS.

channels 1-7 and 16-22 need licenses
channels 8-15 do not need license
From what i understand, a business can use channels 1-7 and 16-22 if licensed

Well you're close! Ch.1-7 & 15-22 require a license but ch.8-14 do not.
Ch.15-22 are repeater output ch. which are 462.5500mhz. to 462.7250mhz.
These are the channels that people with the "bubble pak" radios have to be occasionally "educated" around my area.

Only if using FRS (not GRMS ONLY) equipment.
People have to understand that FRS and GMRS are two different services with different rules.
Just because they share some channels does not make it legal to use GMRS equipment on those channels without a license.

EXCEPT . . . .
Those people are using FRS/GMRS radios and only have to know that they need a license for the GMRS channels (and can't cause much problem anyhow).
The real problem is trying to it to some of the people HERE who think just because it tunes to an FRS frequency they can do whatever they want without a license, or following the rules.

Businesses used to be able to get GMRS licenses. No new ones are issued but existing ones are grandfathered. Now it is just individuals and their immediate family.

Try this link for looking up licenses
Give this link a try - Grandfathered GMRS Entities by Zip Code.
I've found it useful in my area. Hope it helps.
