Default Midland GXT740VP3

I was surfing the internet tonight and I saw that this midland lists the usual 22 GMRS/FRS channels "...PLUS 20 EXTRA CHANNELS..." Does anybody have any idea what the "extra 20 channels" are? Did they add some UHF itinerant channels?

The chart in their online owner's manual is blank for those frequencies.

I did more searching and I found the answer in a wiki. Hmm, "extra channels" huh?

http://wiki.radioreference.com/index..._channel_chart

Midland has started marketing "Extra Channels" on several of their radios. These extra channels are simply existing FRS/GMRS frequencies with hard coded tones. (See Below)

Sounds like a simple gimick to get consumers to pick up the sales on the bubble pak radios so they don't have to discontinue those lines. WE consumers are viewed as stupid $$$ and gullible enough to fall prey to their ploys!

Ok.. there are NO extra frequencies at all.

How they do this is they "hard code" a CTCSS tone into these "extra channels".

For those not technical savvy... those "privacy codes" you hear about are added to one of the real frequencies.. this creates an extra channel.

That is why you cannot set a "privacy code" to one of these.

They use the exact same 22 frequencies all the other channels use.

Neat huh?

You would think that people that use the muliple features of cell phones could figure out how to set privacy tones on a set of walkie talkies. On several of the cruises I went on, it was very apparent that there is a market for Midland's gimmick.
