Arrow GRE Scanners.

Is it true that GRE Scanners are better than Radio Shack Scanners?

Some of the Radio Shack scanners are made by GRE, so in that case NO, it is not true. But I like the PSR-600 better than the PRO-197...for looks and maybe service since I'm not a huge RS fan. But the PRO-106 is a nicer package with better sound than the PSR-500, so take it for what it is worth. The guts are the sam on both.

Thanks for the reply. I do plan on getting myself one someday. They do look like very nice Scanners.

I can't imagine a hand-held scanner sounding better than my PSR-500. IMHO, the sound coming out of my '500 is excellent. It's a terrific scanner.

If someone returns a scanner to RadioShack thay will sell it as a new scanner NOT used so if you buy one from RS look at the date in the battery compartment it will look like (09A02) 09 is the year and 02 is the month it was made.
I got a PRO2096 in December 2008 and it had a date of 07A08 thay said it was new.

As stated GRE makes a lot of the RS scanners.. including the Pro-106 Pro-197 etc. So cant really be "better". Radio Shack does not make any scanners (not that I know of) they are all rebrandded GRE or Uniden's

Good example
The GRE Psr-500 includes the AC adapter, USB cable
The Pro-106 (a 500 inside a new case) doesnt get the above items but gets a manual instead???

So you could make a case for something there.

I have a Pro-197 and I love it. It's the same as the PSR-600. When it's time for a new handheld, it will be the PSR-500. The included accesories are a big plus, and I like the speaker on top vs. the bottom.

One thing I'll say is that when you have a problem or question with a GRE-branded scanner, the support people at GRE America are truly great to deal with.

A scanner may be "new" even if it has an old date. FIFO inventory control doesn't always work.

On the other hand, I KNOW, because I have personally been handed such boxes, that RS re-sells open-box returns as new...which I thought was illegal. Other vendors resell it as "B" stock or "open box" and take a discount.

How funny. That's exactly how I ended up, too. I bought the Pro-106 because it was on sale, and then I bought a PSR-600 from HRO after seeing how much better these are than the previous models. I actually bought a 96 on clearance and re-sold it on EBay, after discovering how much nicer the newer model is.

I also wanted to consolidate models to make it easier to keep the channels in sync... I'm trying to sync the channel numbers on all my radios, and it's turning in to a major pain: 3 different applications for 3 different models, and none of them has any file format in common... so I'm having to build an app to sync data from all 3.

Exclamation HRO is also re-selling returned goods as new.

I think it is important to note here that Ham Radio Outlet also sells returned (defective) merchandise as new stock. I purchased a PSR-600 for my office from HRO at their Salem, NH location and noticed right away that it had some unusual issues. I opened up a service ticket with GRE America, and after several inquiries from them (extremely prompt and professional by the way), they told me it was definitely defective and would need to be returned to the dealer and exchanged for a new one. He even questioned whether this first unit was brand new because the firmware had been "user updated". He said if the firmware was from the Factory, the version number would begin with an "F". If it had been User updated, the firmware version number would begin with a "U". My versions began with a "U".

I drove back to HRO within 2 days of my original purchase. I explained to HRO what happened with the original unit, I gave them a printed copy of the service ticket. They noted the service ticket number and all the information and entered it into their computer system along with the serial number of that unit. He printed out a copy of that and taped it to the box and wrote on it "Defective, Return To GRE".

I was very happy with the replacement, it performed flawlessly. I was so impressed with it's operation, I decided a few days later that I wanted a PSR-600 for my home also. I called ahead to see if one was in stock, and I also asked, "Are these Factory new units, not refurbished???" They emphasized that they ABSOLUTELY DO NOT sell re-packaged or refurbished units.

I drove back to HRO in Salem, NH a few days later, and on a whim, I stuck my receipt from my earlier purchase in my pocket before I left the house - clearly showing the serial number of the defective unit I had returned from the first purchase.

When the gentleman came back from the stock room with my "shiny new" (his words) PSR-600 - you guessed it - it was the very same defective unit I had returned a few days earlier. When I showed him my receipt showing that unit as having been returned as defective, he said, "Um... um.... it has been returned to the factory and repaired". I said I didn't think it was legal to sell refurbished goods as new. He said it's considered "factory new".

First of all, I seriously doubted it had been returned to the factory, repaired, tested, and returned to the dealer in that time span. Secondly, I took the radio out of the box, and the sticky note I had taped to the bottom of the radio referencing the service ticket number and the nature of the problem was still there. I was given another radio after refusing to accept that one.

I know what you mean about Radio Shack. It's hard to find anything on their shelves that hasn't been taped or stapled back together after having been previously purchased and returned, and more often than not the item that originally came in that package has been swapped out with a defective one by the previous purchaser.

Interesting. The only thing I can tell you is that AFAICT Scannermaster (which which I have NO connection other than having bought two scanners from them) does not resell returns. That's based on a very large table inside their facility with piles of scanners labeled as "B Stock," which are in fact tested open box returns. They knock a pretty decent precentage off the price of these. Most are absolutely like new, although some have worn boxes and one or two have notes stating that something is missing. This is reading like an advertisement - it's not meant to be. I just wish to mention that at least someone in this business knows the difference between new and returned goods.

This is the downside of having such flexible return policies. "Return in 15 days no questions asked" is great for some but not for the consumer who pays good money for a new camera and gets home to find fingerprints all over the lens, or corrosion in a radio's battery compartment (as happened with me with a DX398). You'll be lucky if a retail employee wipes down a returned item before it gets shoved back in the box and retaped to sell as new. Future Shop recently sold me a defective DVD player that turned out to have been a buyer return. Once again, it just went right back on the shelf. Frustrating.
