But... just to confirm (sorry to be stupid here)... There are ordinary user scenarios where the shipping FTDI driver package gets installed using the ordinary procedure, and no virtual COM ports are created?

I understand I can disable the VCP device manually. But... there's a scenario where people do that in ordinary use?
Not necessarily. The VCP device might still be there... but you can still use the D2XX method even if it is.

Cuz, I'm going to have A LOT of code to change if this is the case. If it's NOT the case, I can find the FTDI virtual COM port number to make life easier for GRE users, but still not have to re-write the core code that talks to the device.
If you have a reliable way of "finding" the GRE cable's COM port assignment, then I'd recommend you keep using it. I don't know of any such method that's easier than the D2XX DLLs, though (especially if the scanner isn't turned on or connected to the cable).

Peter,

PROG / FUNC / GLOB
- scroll down to Show RadioID , toggle it to Yes, and Save

Without that on, you won't see the RadioIDs.

RadioIDs will show up on all trunked systems that the scanner is able to normally track. However, RadioIDs are not guaranteed to show up on the display every time, depending upon how soon your scanner locked onto the convo and probably one or two other factors.

So it would be a situation where you'd need to have it display nothing if the field didn't return anything.

They will show up on the 4th line like:

RadioID: 7473

Whew! Thank goodness for small favors. You had me worried there for a minute.

My problem is what's "easier" from C#, given that I'm already invested in (shall we say) using the serial port class. Now, given that I *do* of course have different functions to talk to each of the scanner flavors that ScannerCast supports, so having to change to a different set of functions wouldn't exactly be a tragedy. But it would be "real work"... especially given that I'd have to cross the dreaded "managed to unmanaged code boundary" (snicker).

Sigh... Looks like I'm going to have to use my favorite SetupDiXxx functions after all.

Thanks again, Don. I really appreciate your assistance.

Thanks, Mike, that's very helpful actually. I only bought a PSR-500 a few weeks ago, for the express purpose of having ScannerCast support the GRE radios. So, I'm not exactly "Mr. PSR-500" -- it's spent almost it's entire life plugged into my development machine for debugging, or into my Thin Client machine talking to ScannerCast and providing the Hillsborough County NH feed to ScanAmerica now RR Live Audio.

Let's see what I can cook up,

Peter

Arrow New Update Availble! V0.8 (627)

There's a significant update of ScannerCast available... This is version V0.8 (626).

In addition to fulfilling Mike's request for %R (to allow RadioIDs to be displayed in the tags for GRE scanners) this release adds lots of new features (including auto-conf support for Radio Reference feeds, which is really neat... or, at least *I* think so).

More details here in post in the RR Streaming Audio forum: ScannerCast Update: Now with Auto-Config for RR Feeds, Enhanced Re-Connect Logic

Download the latest version of ScannerCast here ScannerCast by K1PGV

Check out the new ScannerCast documentation here: ScannerCast Configuration Guide

As usual, I'm eager to hear your feedback. I'm writing this software for the community, so I rely upon you telling me what's good, what's bad, and what features you need.

Feedback can be send to me at my callsign @arrl.net,

Peter

BTW, you might want to block your feed password that shows in the screen capture for your feed on the documentation page!

LOL -- It's nice of you to notice and say something. But... I thought of that... It's not really my feed password. It's just there as a demo.

Well, assuming I'm looking at the same place as you are and I didn't overlook it someplace else, that is :-)
