Post PSR500 & System Fleetmap Question?

Hello,

I am trying to monitor a Motorola Type IIi Hybrid
system. And was just wondering if you can use the Control channels
only and alternate CC's to monitor the system and still catch all the talkgroups?

Or do you still need the fleetmap? (Which is not known 100% since 3 are blank on the System Fleetmap)

Scanner Frequencies: AOC Trudeau Trunking System, Montreal, Quebec

And would that also effect the TG'S shown? Or could they be different
if no fleet map is programmed?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Larry

1) You question -- "Can I use CC only or do I need fleetmap" -- does not compute. Using "CC Only" simply means that the radio figures out what freq to use for a voice channel assignment itself; has nothing to do with decoding talkgroups.

2) All of the possible TGs on a SmartNet/SmartZone system are divided into 8 blocks. If you know the map parameter for only some of them, program your radio for the unknown blocks as Type II, and you'll at least be able to follow TGs in the blocks you know the map for.

Hello RKG,

Thanks for clearing most of my questions up! I should have
put it more clearly.

Can I use Control channels only and pickup both Type I & Type II radio's on that system without a fleetmap being programmed? Or will I miss some transmissions on a Motorola Type IIi Hybrid system
without a fleetmap?

Can it be done? Or is it a must to have the fleetmap programmed also if only using the Control channels? Sorry I am confused with fleetmaps that are not complete. But learning day by day :-)

Thank you for your time.

Thank you for your time.
For any TG block for which you do not have the correct Map parameters, you will not successfully track Type I (or Type IIi) talkgroups (i.e., those denominated as "fleet/subfleet").

Note that is true whether you use "control channel only" or not.

There are a couple of things you can do if divining the proper fleet map is important enough to warrant the effort. Control Data analyzers like "Trunker" (an older DOS-based program that is probably still available somewhere) will usually be able to construct a fleet map successfully if you let it run long enough (couple of days). Alternatively, you can simply try different size code values for a TG block that you know is active until you see which one appears to pick up traffic and reply traffic faithfully.

That was the answer to my all questions and more!
I now understand why I was missing the other part of the
conversation at times.

You have been a great help RKG! Thank you for taking the time
to clear everything up for me. Makes sense now! :-)
