cbro298,
If you press and hold backlight key for aprox. 5 seconds, it will stay on.
To turn off press light key once.

Isn't this standard across 99% of scanners?
In fact, isn't this standard across 99% of backlit electronics?

Well, on my BCD396XT, I have to set the amount of time the backlight stays on somewhere in the settings menu. After it's set, a simple press-and-release of the power/backlight button will turn on the backlight for the time specified in the settings.
On the BCD396XT, holding the power/backlight button in is used to turn the scanner on and off.

Standard or not, it was a legitimate question that receieved a helpful response for the the OP. That's a good thing.

Yes, but, as far as I know, not on a global basis.

As far as I can tell the only way to get the backlight to come on, only during a transmission, is to enable that option for each individual user manually. I know of no quick (global) way to enable the backlight to come on for all the individual transmissions. Global just means the same setting applies to all objects in the scanner without having to manually edit each one. As stated earlier you can can enable a backlight for each received transmission, but it must be added to each object manually.

How is it enabled? The backlight on with transmission...
After looking, I can only assume this is a 500 thing, and not applicable to the 300/400?

Using Win500, you can select an individual talkgroup object or highlight several, on the right under the alert area you can select backlight: on, off, or flash.
Doing it by hand, you go to program and edit (on the talkgroup you want) scroll down the menu to "Backlight:" and press the right or left arrow and it will scroll through on, off, and flash. Select the one you want and hit save. Don't know of a way to do it to more than one at once when doing it by hand.

When on an object or channel you want to light up - push PGM then F2 twice and then scroll down to backlight and set it to "on". Save. You will have to set each one manually or you can use software to set the backlight for each one. Setting the backlight to "flash" will cause the LCD to blink while receiving a transmission.

GRE500/600 only...the 300/400 don't have the "function" keys...so it doesn't help me...
