GRE- 500 and 600
A few loose comments on the GRE-500 and GRE-600 scanners.
Although the learning curve was a bit steep converting the "channel" type thinking to " object oriented " thinking,I certainly enjoy working with them ! Thanks GRE !
I have been into scanning for almost 50 yr.and these dudes are something else !
Don't even think of programming them from the front panel,
get a software package for your computer to do it. If you don't have access to a computer or a friend with one, you have my condolences !
I have a DRESSLER ARA 2000LL and an ICOM AH-7000
antennas up about 40 ft. and either one will overload my 600. For my listening needs ,I can do quite well with an
old " bag phone " 800mhz on the back of the 600.
The 500 does very good in the car and on the patio with the usual privisos of trying to get the receiver above the window line. It was very pleasing to be able to dump my 600 into my 500 via the usb cable ( it sure do save an 80yr. olds eyes and brain )
I put a very small antenna on the 500 ( from my Scout 40 )
and the Ohio MARCS system came in great providing me with a very small portable package however the vhf freq's suffered greatly because of the small "capture " of the "stub ". The stock antenna covers well enough that I'll stay with it !
Question ! Now what do we do with all these analog
scanners that we seem to have acquired?
Shall we put them in the pile with the 35mm cameras?
Anyway , keep on scanning !

What's a 35mm camera? Is that anything like a 33 rpm record or 8-Track?
Congratulations on the step up to the latest technology and embracing it, beejay!

My first scanner was an eight channel Electra Bearcat III with VHF lo and hi cards in 1973. Since then, I have owned many Uniden scanners and have been very happy with all of the models. When I went to upgrade to digital I looked at the 396T and the PSR500. I finally decided on the PSR500. Being a "Uniden man" all those years made it a tough decision but I have not been disappointed at all with the PSR500. I think it has alot of great features. It also has great sensitivity and I am able to hear several surrounding counties with the stock antenna that came with it. I bought it one year ago today. I use WIN500 to program it and I also like the features of that program.

Psr-500 & 600
I have had my PSR-500 & 600 for about 4 months now. I think there great, I am using the RS 800mhZ antennas on both and are working very well.
As far as my three analog scanners they are very busy with many other freqs. in my area.
Like DaveIN said, the 35mm's are on the shelf with 8-tracks and 33rpm's and dont forget the vcr's

Geezers...
The last 8 track tape I bought was Jimi Hendrix, and the last 35mm SLR film camera I owned was a Nikon something, something with a 50 mm fixed lens... dragged it all over South East Asia back in 1968.
Being a geek at heart, I have a Nikon D70 and a D5000 now with a few different lens.
Now I'm considering the PSR600.... I'm not sure what software I should use. I'll be using it to monitor my accounts here in SoCal.
Any feedback would be appreciated. I live in an apt. so a simple low profile wide band antenna is a must.
TIA... Semper Fi

I use both Win500 and PSRedit500 and both of them are great programs to use, making programming the scanner a breeze. Both have a 30 day free trial so you can try them both and make up your mind if you get the 600. I have a Pro-106, which is technically the same radio in hand held form, and I LOVE it!!!

35mm cameras and vinyl records have their own place in quality. I have a Bearcat 210xl and a newer Pro197. They both deliver in their own way. So does the MTS2000, et al. The GRE is really sensitive and prone to overload but I would take that over a deaf radio.
I use a Larsen/Radall tri-band antenna in the car and has surprising results on 800.

I just received my PSR600 via UPS. I plugged it into my computer, installed the driver and installed the sample software that comes with it. I paid to have San Bernardino Co. (Smartnet) and Riverside Co. (EDACS) pre programed. In less than 30 Min. I had it up and scanning. I am amazed by this little radio and I want to give kudos to "Scanner Master" for their prompt and professional service.
Woo Hoo....

If you put in 88-108 broadcast filter you should have less overloading problems, at least with VHF.
I have two 30' masts with different ant on each, one has a 18db preamp the other a 10db preamp (I live in a very radio dead dogleg valley), but even without the preamps (passthrough mode) it still only picked up up 25% on my VHF until I put in the 88-108 filter.
The 18db preamped ant pulls in 800 like crazy, it has built in 2 scanner outputs, I tested the GRE vs BC796 and the GRE600 gets 800 MUCH better than the BC796, but the BC get VHF better than the GRE. I switched the leads just to make sure it wasn't the leads that were causing the diff, had same results.

Hey, sitting between my EOS 30D and EOS 5D is an EOS Elan 7 35mm camera...never give up the old stuff. As far as GRE, my Pro197 aka GRE PSR 600 has one hell of a receiver! Awesome scanner.
