Question which is better psr 500 or psr 600 ?

this may be a dumb question but i was just wondering which GRE scanner is better , as far as being stronger to pickup more signals i do understand that they serve different purposes as the 500 is very portable , and the 600 is made to remain in a fixed position ( home - mobile applications ) . used to be a HH was never close to being a good signal pickerupper as a base unit would be , is this still the case , or has technology changed with both these units being basically the same . can someone shed some light on the subject ???

I've owned both, no noticeable difference.

great !!! , so it is just really a matter of preference if you want to go portable with a HH , or do a base / mobile setup . i prefer a handheld , but i was concerned that i might be giving up some of the signal strength by going that way . i appreciate the input a lot , that really helps me to make a decision which to buy .

It's pretty much a matter of personal preference. I pref ere base units, as most all my scanning is done at my home office. I like the larger speaker, the the durability of the metal enclosure for antenna and power jack mounts. Plus you can push buttons like L/O, etc, while scanning, without having to hold the scanner (unless you have a good scanner stand for the hand-held).

i know what you mean about the larger speaker , i have owned many HH's over the last 30 + +years i've been in the hobby , most had bad audio quality , i recall one i had back in the 70-80's made by RUSSELL INDUSTRIES , remember those ? , it seemed at the time to have a much better audio output than others . by the way how did you like the speaker in the PSR-500 ??? , is it tinny , or does it have good output ?

It's one of the better ones IMHO.

sounds like a plan , on my end that is , i think you have sold me on the PSR-500 , our area is going digital just any time now , they are testing already , and i have no digital receiver , so that means i am going to have to take action soon , as the old radios will go silent for the most part , thanks for all , walt

I have both, The only Big difference is my outside Antenna on my Pro 197 (Same as the 600) brings in stuff farther away but the hand held picks up stuff in adjacent counties just great, the handheld Pro 106 (same as the 500) is fantastic for mobile and just walk around listening operations on Trunking and Conventional freqs

that's been my experience in the past on analog radios - the base units always seem to be built sturdier and have more pickup-power than the HH'S , but i have never owned a digital so basically that was my original thought that i wanted to know if the newer digital HH'S & base units had been improved to the point to where a handheld was as good as a base unit as far as performance .

Thumbs up 500 or 600 ?

I have both scanners.
They preform very well in my area which is a P25.
Both have RS 800MHz antennas which work very well.
