I am having difficulty figuring out how to hear a VHF Conventional Channel that has now been switched to "digital." Is there a setting that needs to indicate a digital channel? All I hear is modem like noise.

A 500 should autodetect P25 signals and decode. You can try to force P25 decoding by setting the frequency to (in the squelch tone settings) NAC Search.

If that doesn't work then there may be a good chance that the channel your listening to is not P25 but another digital mode.

Since you don't say what frequency, we can only guess as to what has happened. Your question might get a better answer in the Indiana State forum further down the forums page.
