Default PSR500 Squelch question

I received my new PSR500 last Wednesday. Have the local conventional P25 freqs programmed in and so far all seems well except for one thing. IF I turn the squelch control counter clockwise I never hear any white noise, also scanning does not stop. Seems to be hearing traffic ok. Just checked and scanning does not stop no matter which way I turn the squelch knob. One channel, EMS Dispatch, is choppy quite a bit, but others are crystal clear.

Bought the radio from Ham Radio Outlet. They have a 10 day return policy so if there is something wrong with my squelch circuit, want to return it.

Is it possible it could be a setting??

Should I try reloading firmware first?

If you are monitoring a trunked system, the squelch control will not stop the scanning and you won't hear any noise.

If it is doing this on conventional frequencies, then you might have a problem...

If you have a NAC or PL programmed this is normal. If it's set to CSQ or "search" you will hear noise when the squelch is open and scanning will stop.

Chris,

OK, No trunked systems here, We just went to conventional digital P25 system.

Kevin,
Yes on all channels either NAC or PL is programmed, so I would assume it is normal.

Thanks!!
