Default Psr 800 external speaker choices

So I came to realize that all my old unidens externals don't work with my 800. I bought an amplified speaker from radio shack works great but if the scanner is plugged in in the car I get a lot of static. Any suggestions on what may be done or other external speakers I could use. Thanks

Unless you are getting some engine noise, I don't know why a Uniden speaker would not work with the PSR-800. You may need to get a ground loop isolator. They can be purchased at numerous places for about $15.

I do know that the audio is not very loud because GRE doesn't want people going deaf because they are completely stupid and cannot think for themselves so they lower the audio through the headphone jack. I guess they never thought that some people might actually be using their scanner in a loud vehicle and want to use it with an external speaker.

This is about the only complain I have with the scanner. You might need to get a small amplifier to get the audio output that you're wanted to get.

I've struggled with external choices, too. I tried Uniden's BC20 and---in my estimation---it behaves like a non-amplified extension speaker on the PSR-800. And presently I'm using Radio Shack's 21-130 amplified speaker, which clearly is amplified but the main police freq for my area has dispachers who whisper, lol, so at highway speeds I still struggle to hear it adequately. However, if I play back the recorded audio it is louder than the live audio. Unfortunately, this is an observation and doesn't offer a suggestion to you.

I meant to add that I am not experiencing engine noise on my 21-130.

I wonder if there's a speaker out there with an amp built in, that plugs into the cigarette lighter?

Perhaps there is but thus far I've tried two and neither have worked for my needs. So for $21 I just now ordered the amplifier mentioned in Mike's post.

Hmm I may go that route too.

So would you just wire that directly to the battery with a toggle switch on the power (red) wire?

Well, you could do ask you mention. But I have my external speaker wired differently and I intend to wire the amplifier in the same manner. My ground [black] wire is wrapped around a screw at the dash that goes into metal. For the positive [red] wire I have it attached at my fuse box. My car has blade type fuses, so I removed one of them, then removed sufficient insulation from the positive wire (approximately 1.5"), wrapped it several times around one of the fuse blades, and then reinserted the fuse. I chose one of the fuses whose circuit is on only when the ignition switch is on. Various automotive parts stores---and possibly Radio Shack---sell fuse taps, too, which would be another option.

Wow, thanks bfletcher! I think I may order an amp too now. I have a Goodwill down the street from me where there are tons of speakers. Do you think a computer speaker wired up to the amp would work? Or does it have to be a special speaker for use with 12V?

Or is there a way to hook up to the existing car speakers?

command - I won't pretend to know what spec is needed on the speaker; on Amazon's site that amp is listed at 300 watts at some given ohmic value but I wouldn't be surprised if it is not truly 300 watts. I know I certainly don't need to throw 300 watts to listen to the scanner in my car. And it is my guess that since the amplifier will be driving the external speaker it [the speaker] does not need to be powered by 12v, that simply a non-amplified extension speaker is what we want. But again, don't quote me on that.

As a side note, I do periodically use a TaoTronics bluetooth device with my Jawbone. The output is fine but for me I don't find it very comfortable to have it in my ear for extended periods of time.

I feel bad that dmo was the OP on this thread but we haven't heard from him to know if any of this is helpful

Look at Speco AES-4 Amplified $25.00 on E-bay. Well built and will blow you out of your vehicle at full volume on a PSR 800.
