Light on with squelch is a feature of Uniden scanners, so it won't be available on the Psr-500.
Backlit Keypad and Display - you select one or the other or both to light (or not), when you press the light button, on any key press (function ignore), or on any key press with that key's function.

As the Pro-106 has the ability to light the display when receiving I suspect the 500 has the same ability.
Don't use ARC500 so I can't help you there.

I cannot advise you regarding how to make these adjustments in ARC 500 since I use Win500; however, there are methods of changing how the keyboard & LED lights function, individually or as a group.
If you cannot figure out how this is done in ARC 500, you can do this manually. See light settings:
Easier to Read Pro-106/197/PSR500/600 Digital Scanner Manual
If you are wanting to have the lights operate the same on all radio traffic, you will need to make changes in "global settings." You can also go to "program-edit-current" (soft key) to change an individual talk group or conventional frequency.
Sometimes, when I am traveling & wanting to extend battery life, I engage "stealth" mode. This turns all light functions off.

Guys, there is no method to turn the light on with squelch on the Psr-500 or RadioShack clone Pro-106 (or Psr-800/Pro-18) This is a Uniden scanner patented feature.

Really? Better tell that to my scanner then (Pro-106), as it turns the display LED's on for activity and turns them off again when it resumes scanning, it must not be aware that this is a Uniden only feature

That option certainly is available on the PSR500.
Here is a link to the owners manual, check the last menu item description at the bottom of page 103.

Are you telling us your Pro-106 radio turns the backlight on when the squelch opens, then turn the backlight off when the scanning resumes?
Controls the backlight operation. Norml (Normal) uses the backlight key on the keypad. Key activates the backlight when any key is pressed. Ignore activates the backlight when a key is pressed, and that keyʼs normal function is ignored if the backlight is off when it is pressed. On causes the backlight to remain on all the time. Stlth (Steath) disables the backlight.

Directly from the manual I linked above:
Backlight On, Off
or Flash
Controls whether the backlight
should be on, off or flashing while the object is active.

On a per =object basis you can set the backlight to come on when it receives a frequency and off after it stops receiving. I don't use software to program my psr-500 , i program by hand, and have mine set to turn the backlight on and off each time it receives .

I'm going to have to agree with with all the other Pro-106/PSR-500 users on this one. It certainly does have this option and dependents on the specific object setting, like Jake said, and not a global setting.

I just tried the Backlight setting myself, and my Pro-106 is always in "stealth" mode. I believe Stealth mode only turns off sound, and you have to select "Alert Mode" to turn off to stop it.

"Stealth" mode disables the backlight.
From Mark's Scanners Eaiser to Read page:
Easier to Read Pro-106/197/PSR500/600 Digital Scanner Manual
Backlight: Sets how the backlight will function while the object is active.Default is Off.
Press or to select Off, On, or Flash. Note: Does not function when Light Mode(in the GLOB menu) is set to Stlth.

As others have mention, that's exactly what I'm telling you, and as stated it is a per channel setting, not global. I'll take a video of it at some point today.

Patented?..now thats a stretch..my AOR 82MK3 will illuminate when SQ breaks, pretty sure my psr800 dose also..,,i doubt they cut a check to uNIDEN for that option...
and anyway,,Seems that Youtube video
settles the topic...

If you read the following, "stealth" mode refers to both light & sound. I am not referring to "squelch-activated, per se. Easier to Read Pro-106/197/PSR500/600 Digital Scanner Manual
When I looked, the "stealth" mode setting is listed under "Global Settings Menu." I don't believe it can be individualized per talk group or conventional frequency.
Again, you can engage stealth for both light & sound.

I was going to say that my PSR500 does turn the light on when the radio receives a transmission. So .. it isn't just a Uniden thing. My BC246T does not do this .. and it is a Uniden. Go figure.

When I was playing around in my software (ARC500) the other day, I was able to turn the Back Light on or off for any frequency I wanted. The scanner was set to "Off" by default. This setting is accessible in the "Object Browser" window.

That's my bad then. I didn't scroll far enough down the menu to see the light mode option as most of the stuff I scan don't have lights programmed.
