For my Dell Inspiron 17R (with USB 3.0 ports, if it matters), the only way I can do it is to power off the laptop. Plug the USB cable into the computer and into the scanner, turn on the laptop and then hurry up and do the usual tasks to get the scanner to come up in the right mode. Then when I am fully booted into Windows I have access to do the firmware updates.
Took me all year before I figured that out. Drove me crazy.
