Exclamation Win500 Data Corruption - could kill trunking

I posted the below in a couple of threads where people had described a specific problem, but thought it might be a good idea to have it show up on the main forum page, as well:

For those who have seen a 'failure to lock onto VC', or 'ping-ponging between CC and VC'....

If you're using Win500 to upload to the radio, it's possible that that program is contributing to the problem. I wasn't initializing some data correctly when building TSYS objects for upload, and it looks like that corrupted data could kill the radio's ability to tune or unmute VCs in some circumstances. That corrupted data seems to affect CPU U0.1 more than F1.0, based on my testing.

I was able to reproduce the problem here on a couple of Motorola 3600 systems using U0.1 and Win500 v00.40. I've released Win500 v00.41 - I haven't seen the problem with that version.

Default Win500 and Hex

I don't know if it is related or not, but when I set the TGID Format to Hex under the General settings page about half my talkgroups were corrupted. This is a Motorola 3600 system. When I changed the setting to Hex and then uploaded the scanner half the talkgroups became 00-000 or something similar. This is a type II system so they were invalid and nothing was being picked up on these talkgroups.

I rentered the talkgroups with the correct hex values and they again went to 00-000 or 100-02 when uploaded. When I reentered the talkgroups again (had to enter in trunktracker format even though it was displayed in Hex) they seemed to stay until I scrolled up and down the screen. Then the same ones went back to 000-00 and 100-02.

This happened in ver 0.40.

All the talkgroups that seem to get messed up are in the range of 35000-38160. Number above 63000 seem to work OK.

Looks like Don fixed that in 0.42

I fixed part of it, but not the switching formats (General Settings tab) or entering TGIDs in HEX. That's now fixed in v00.43.

Hi Don,

Does your software have the ability to change the radios pre-configured public safety search bands. This would be a great feature to have. It would also be great to add a "5th or "6th set of frequency's to this list as well (if possible). Thanks.

Public Safety (Pub Safety)

" 0: 33.4-46.5 MHz

" 1: 151-170 MHz

" 2: 453-467 MHz

" 3: 764-806 MHz

" 4: 851-869 MHz

The radio doesn't support changing these through the PC/IF port. This would require a CPU/DSP firmware update to change, which is probably unlikely.

Thanks mike,

I just happen to come accross this referance in the online manual (page-107) mention editing the public safety service search. But i don't think it includes the frequency's range.

"SRVC Menu Reference
The SRVC menu is used when creating new Service Search
objects, or editing existing Service Search objects."

Too bad Don's software won't let you edit the frequency ranges. That would have been a nice feature to have.

The radio won't let Don's software or My software change the ranges. Those are hard coded in the radio. If it was possible to do, I'm sure Don would have added it. I know I would have added it to PSREdit.

I'm surprised GRE went that route and locked it as is. I remember my older GRE made PRO-92 having tons of pre-tagged editable service ranges. I think it was the best i've seen to date. Too bad they didn't rework it and carry it over to the PSR-500.

I also remember how generous GRE was with reguards to step selection with the PRO-92. Will software let you edit step sizes while setting up upper/lower limit search ranges.

I don't know what's the big deal about this. You can create as many Service and Custom searches as you want with their own ranges, tags and step sizes and search them at the same time you scan your regular stuff. You'll need to anyway if you want to Search/Scan/Sweep at the same time. I use my radio like that at all times.

You can enable the "FlexStep" option in the expert settings and it'll let you enter any step you need.

Again, this radio has the most flexibility, choices and tweaks that I've seen in a long time. I don't see a need to fret over a trivial non-issue....

I think i'm going brain dead. I didn't realize that. This scanner seems to have it all the more and more you dig into it. Thanks for pointing that out. Same for the flexstep, which i did not see any details to step selection being mentioned in the online manual.
