how dose LA city use its tac Channels looking for info

I am making a trip to the city of Los Angeles
And listening to medical
Calls on my local fire dispatch gets old , but what is cool
Is that where I live when the local county fire gets a fire call
They give them a tac channel for just the fire calls or big wrecks
And the BC and the units at the scene
Will use the tac channel so this makes it cool I just listen to the tac
Channels in my scanner and only hear the big stuff.
would this work for LA CITY FIRE

Yes... It's probably one of the most easy systems to listen to, because unlike other fire systems, most of the tac stuff goes through repeaters. So you can get all the action most of the time, even if you're on the opposite end of the city.

Monitoring LAFD

The two best channels to listen to if you are not going to monitor everything are:

Dispatch 9: Brush Fire Command
Command 11: Command large incidents

Incidents that are significant are generally few and far between. However, when they do get used, Command 11 is used between all of the chiefs on scene and between the IC and dispatch ("OCD"). So, Channel 11 is generally quiet except for when there is a significant incident occurring. Most of the other units are on the assigned Tac channel (12-18), so this one is the most interesting and where the best info comes from.

Dispatch 9 is occasionally used as a backup dispatch channel, but that is rare. Usually it is silent unless there is a brush fire. When there is a brush fire, all of the units switch to Channel 9 until they arrive on scene, at which point they switch to the assigned Tac channel.

Basically, if you hear radio traffic on Channel 9 or 11, it should be for something interesting.

As a general rule, LAFD incidents in the "metro" area (south of Mulholland Drive/Hollywood Hills) will be assigned the first available tac frequency beginning with Tac 12, then climb numerically. In the San Fernando Valley area, Tac 17 is the first choice, usually followed by Tac 18, after which they'll jump back down to Tac 12 and climb numerically again.

You might want to subscribe to LAFD_Alerts, where they post major incidents, usually only slightly delayed from the initial dispatch time. Go to http://groups.google.com/group/LAFD_ALERT for that and other technologies they use (e.g. Twitter and RSS feeds). Any newsworthy incidents are usually posted, and almost always they'll post any fires that reach either "Greater Alarm" or "Major Emergency" levels.

Here's a typical post, and note that it shows the dispatch and tac frequencies near the end:

That's telling you the incident type, address, Map page & grid, first-in Fire Station district; brief description; the dispatch (8) and tac (17 & 18) channels, time of dispatch, and PIO sending the alert. Updates and final dispositions are often sent out too..
