I've noticed for the last 3 or 4 months while listening to the City EDACS system there is often a short burst of digital garble at the end of many transmissions ... could this be related to simulcasting on the new P25 system?

Could be a turkey call system identifier... Meaning dispatch can see who is transmitting.

Use the "Motorola P25" setting with the control channels.

I think they must have other sites up now. Reception of System 008 almost 95% from my location.

001 still weaker in mid 70-80% range.

They're both full-kersmash, 98-99%, in the SCV this evening... Wonder if they bumped the power and played with the antennas a bit (funny weather to be doing that in, though)...

Well if you can barely hear it in Burbank, we can forget the earlier conjecture that Lukens was one of the active sites.

So either they dialed up power on Oat, or maybe brought something else online like maybe Baldwin Hills, San Pedro to help cover the basin.

I'll try to check it out during my travels around the basin later this week.

I was thinking the same thing... 8*)

If it's another site, wouldn't it have another site number (rather than 008)?

If it's a simulcast site it will have the same number as the other sites (1 or 8). If it's a standalone site, such as a fill in site that doesn't share the same physical RF channels as another site it will have it's own Site ID.

Drove right by Baldwin Hills site and its certainly not on the air.

At LAX could only pick up the systems about 40-50% with some elevation. Street level it was barely registering 10-20%.

Also doubt Mt. Lee is up as the signal should be stronger in mid City area then it is.

Default STRS

For the record I've been told this system is called "STRS" = Simulcast Trunked Radio System in official LA City lingo...

I also doubt if Baldwin Hills is up. Here in Venice/Mar Vista, I see no improvement in the LA City Project 25 trunk system.
Still choppy sound both sites.

Listening to EDACS system I note growing number of DOT, Parks Ranger and Zoo units with digital sounding radios.

Appears they are now natively on the P25 being simulcast back to the EDACS.

As far as P25 reception its still kinda weak in the LA basin without use of outside antenna. Guess they still don't have other sites up.

For fun I let the unitrunker run for a bit to see what TG appear on the two P25 systems.

After a couple hours came up with following list.

001
20166 - DOT
20175 - DOT
20177 - DOT
20581 - Ranger
20585 - Parks
20588 - Zoo
20592 - Griffith Park
65325
65347
65349
65353
65357
65383
65397
65399

008
20164 - DOT
20166 - DOT
20193 - DOT
20553 - Street Maint.
20579 - Ranger
20580 - Ranger
20584 - Zoo
20585 - Parks
20588 - Zoo
20591 - Parks
20592 - Griffith Park
20609 - GS PD
20615 - GS
20629 - GS
65347
65353
65357
65382
65383
65399

The 65xxx seem to be the old EDACS patch groups and are simulcast of other traffic (all DOT activity from what I can tell).

Also note some TGs are duplicated across both systems. So appears unlike the EDACS that departments are not clearly segregated at this time.

Oh and the reception is still pretty bad in the basin. Seems like no other sites have come on the air. Need outside antenna to pick things up clearly.

Its been a bit since the last post.

It seems some of the frequencies for system 001 have changed.

001
866.1125 - alt
866.1375
866.3875 - control
866.4125
866.6125 - alt
866.6375
866.8875 - alt
866.9125
867.1125 - alt

Reception still remains so-so.

Received a presentation about the STRS P25 project, and below are some highlights.

o Harris is the vendor
o P25 system - 6 simulcast Tx/Rx sites. Old EDACS was 4 Tx and 3 Rx sites.
o 2 simulcast systems. Citywide 1 = 20 channels, Citywide 2 = 21 channels
o Improved coverage, capacity, and reliability
o 3,000 new radios. 1,000 existing P25 trunking capable radios upgraded
o Approx 6,000 LA City subscribers, capacity for up to 12,000 and upgradable for upto 24,000.
o Back end interface links to new Port of LA 700Mhz TRS, LA County CWIRS, and eventually LA-RICS
o System acceptance estimated July.
