If that system uses Motorola radios, then there would likely be absolutely no justification for using 5200s as 5200s would only bring OpenSky capability, so why bother? That's not an OpenSky system and never will be.

5100s, possibly. But 5200s would be a waste of money.

and no government agency would ever waste money just to buy the radio with the bigger number right?

Default P5200

Well the reason for the P5200 is the 700 Mhz capability of this model that the P5100 does not have.
LWIN is a mostly 700 system with 800 simulcast mostly in New Orleans area.

I thought that the 5200 was a (slightly) cheaper version of the 7200 without encryption, so it would be EDACS, P25 and so on. And in the New Orleans area there's areas like St Tammany that are still EDACS but where the ability to work on the 700MHz state Moto system would be a big plus.

Default St. Tammany

The M/A com P5200 is a cheaper, more economical version of the P7200. LWIN is a Motorola branded system but is P25 compliant. According to state records they maintain a cache of EF Johnson radios to use on the LWIN in times of emergency. This shows that non Motorola branded radios will work. The M/A com P5200 is P25 compliant but is most commonly used on provoice and opensky systems. St. Tammany and Pointe Coupee would benefit greatly if they had the P25 700 mhz radios. I believe with proper programming that they could operate on LWIN. More importantly they could operate on their system as a primary and use the LWIN as a backup and for interoperability with other state agencies. The key would be to have P25 700 mhz ma com radios. Any 800 mhz ma com radios would not work on LWIN. Motorola and M/A com can talk to each other on the National Mutual AID 800 mhz "Itac" system.
