I'm just about to get some orions, so I know next to nothing, but I will ask this:

If its in your house, do you have a powerful enough 12 volt power supply? Amperage wise?

From my somewhat limited experience with these Orions, I've had one blow the on-board fuse once but that will cause it to not do anything. Is this a remote-mount head or a dash mount? If the cable is loose between the two the radio will act erratically i know that. Mine would do something similar if the connector or ribbon cable is not fully seated. Things to check i guess, other than that at least it powers on somewhat so it shouldnt be completely toast! Any chance of a static spark on the antenna or even lightning? Power surge? For me, I like to start simple and work into the expensive problems!

The fuse will be located under one of the panels, im at work and its been a while since ive tore one down. If you are looking at it with the head facing you, it should be on the bottom. Couple screws takes the cover off, a RF shield and then towards the rear of the circuit board on the right there will be a small surface mount fuse. If it's blown it will be obvious as the board around it will be blackened and there will be a void where the explosion happened. Sometimes its as easy as replacing the fuse, but keep in mind the fuse blew for a reason so check everything for burrs or cuts that might bite into a wire or something. Best of luck!

Is your backlight turned all the way off?
Do the righthand keypad lights work and the Vacum Florecent Display does not?

I'm not far from you. I work in Melbourne. I can take a look at that radio for you and at the very least, I certainly know where the onboard fuse is located and can test it. And I have spares. PM me if you want to make the trip to Melbourne on a weekday...or a Saturday.
