Well first check to make sure your LPE is capable of ProVoice. It has to have 1meg of Flash memory, the DSP must be flashed for ProVoice, and you must have option 29 installed. Press Menu("M") and scroll down to REVISION, then press Menu again and use the arrow buttons to scroll to "FLSH SIZ" which should read "1M" and also to "DSP RAM" which should display something similar to "i4r05g01"(maybe someone can chime in what the earliest flash is that will work, but my radio says 1999 which I think is the earliest year you could get an IMBE chip in these radios). Next, return to the main Menu, and scroll down to the bottom to where it says FEATURES, hit Menu again, and then scroll to end with the arrow keys until you start seeing two digit numbers listed like "04 05 06 07..." and look for "29" as this is the ProVoice option. It's no problem at all to listen to both analog and ProVoice talkgroups on the same EDACS system. During programming, all you have to do is set each digital talkgroup as such, otherwise by default it is set to analog. That's most of the work right there.
There is no system key like Motorola uses for programming radios up on EDACS, unless you happen to live in one of those unfortunate places(like I do) that uses
ESK. This will prevent you from programming a radio onto their system without a)some extremely expensive equipment and b)the correct Key. Otherwise it's pretty straightforward (read:easy) to program an EDACS radio to monitor without it trying to affiliate with any sites.
Edit: I just checked the database for New Jersey, and didn't see any ESK in use on any of the EDACS systems, so you're probably golden.
