• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

My area is currently using an 800 mhz Harris Edacs system, but will be changing over to a new Harris P25 system with P7200 and P7300 portables.
My question, since the new system is P25, can I use any 700 mhz P25 radio?

I have seen quite a few Moto portables for sale as reasonable prices. The Harris P7200/P7300 portables are still hard to find.
Thanks in advance for any information.

You might look at an EF Johnson 5100 portable, as they cover both 700 and 800 P25. My 5100 has noticeably better audio and far fewer decode errors on the local simulcast system than my XTS3000.

Harris is a very open infrastructure so yes

This is why I love Harris. I mean, didn't they even get sued by Moto because they suggested a client buy a piece of Moto hardware that better fit their needs, rather than try to cobble together something close?

Motorola and other manufacturers may have trouble when talkgroups are patched or multi-selected together on the system. Any of the Motorola APX line with recent firmware should be fine, but even XTS/XTL2500's with host version 9 don't follow the proprietary Harris talkgroup patches. I'm sure even the latest version of XTS3000/Astro Spectra firmware don't, either.

Motorola may have added support for Harris patches at some point to the ASTRO 25 line, but I'm not sure what the minimum firmware version would be.

I would ask your System owner before you buy anything. Just because it works on the system does not mean they will let you use it.

Plus one, or ask the admin for a compliant subscriber list, as in a list of radios that have been tested to ensure they properly operate with the Harris infrastructure.

I assume it will be P25 Phase I because you mentioned the P7200. If that's the case you could probably pick up a P7100ip radio pretty cheap that is capable of the features you need. It is always a good idea to talk with your system admin first.

If I recall the initial P25 standard didnt specify how patches where created. Moto stuck with the way they did patches as did Harris. Both vendors now have options that allow use of the other.

Food for thought: Just because a portable/mobile of a different manufacture than the infrastructure works today doesn't mean it will always work. For some strange reason Brand 'X' radios often have issues after the Brand 'Y' infrastructure get a firmware 'upgrade'.

Not pointing fingers, just sayin'.

I think that's the direction I'm going.
I currently have a P7100 and really like it.

If you don't already have it, the 7300 or an XG series are a mich better option as the 7200receives no updates past either XGP3 or XGP4 and its not officially supported for TDMA operation.
