• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

RPM, is there a fast way to move TGs around?

DO NOT ASK ME FOR HELP PROGRAMMING YOUR RADIO. NO.
I need to adjust the file I am currently using to be more suitable to my needs, which is strictly to use a P7100 as a glorified, high performance scanner.

I'm an experienced RPM and ProGrammer user and I've been doing this for years.

But, I'm now using a file that was built by somebody else, one which has a lot of updated group information in it, info I didn't have direct access to.

The problem is that this person arranged the systems and groups so that there are only 16 groups per system, which is logical for an authorized transmitting radio, say one used by an active LEO, but for scanning purposes it's anything but optimal.

So, I have, to describe an example, a large department using 48 talkgroups divided into three separate systems, each with 16 talkgroups.

I want to merge all three into a single department system with all 48 talkgroups in it. The radio will scan up to 50 talkgroups in a single list and for scanning purposes this is a better setup.

I have not found any way to copy, paste, or drag and drop the talkgroups around and merge these systems into one.

Does anyone know of a way to do this? Since I have not found it, I am operating under the presumption that there isn't one, as I've been using RPM for years and never found it, But it can't hurt to ask. Maybe someone has a way.

Otherwise, the process of transferring literally hundreds of talkgroups from one system to the next is going to be very time consuming. One at a time, I don't even want to think about it!

I like RPM, it's very logical and orderly, and generally better than Motorola CPS, but not in this case.
Motorola makes it much easier to perform the same task I need to do now.

I am not aware of a way. When I have had to do similar I generally print the summary with each GID and then add or delete as needed. I have been doing a ton of it lately cleaning up my global sets. If you do find a way that is better I would love to hear it.

What I'd really like to see is a radio programming platform that allows you to treat talkgroups and conventional channels like a bunch of virtual file cards like Rolodex cards, and be able to drag and drop them around in your radio personality in an intelligent manner. The data input into those cards would include user definable restrictions and permissions on them, and access to the cards could be dependent on user access credentials, so a lower level tech could not program sensitive talkgroup card information into his own personal radio without authorization from a tech with a sufficiently high access level.

Setting up a new personality would be a relatively fast and simple affair consisting of selecting the talkgroup cards you need and dragging and dropping them into the system framework.

The cards would be in types following the RPM convention of frequency and group sets of various types.

I think someone will eventually do this. I wish I had it now, though.

You can sort of do this drag and drop by configuring "zones" in the radio but that's only available in the XG/XL series radios and it still operates off your system/group structure so your obstacle of having all talkgroups under 1 system for scanning purposes wouldn't work.

I have never found a way to copy and paste. Always had to re-write everything. One thing I do is make a master list of GID's for a system. Then I delete what I don't want when I make the group sets. I find it easier to delete 75 GID's then type out 25 of them.

RPM and RPM2 have the ability to set up zones. It's based on the type of radio if that ability is available.

Globalize your sets and you can recall them in other RPM files.

But the problem is that there's no way to quickly or easily merge two different global (or local) sets into one larger one.

That's the problem.

The file as I got it splits up several department sets into multiple sets for each department, none containing more than 16 talkgroups.

There's NO reason to do that if you're only scanning. Put all 50 into one group set and let it scan.

Nowhere near a paved road, away from the maddening
Before I wandered out the door at Harris and retired, there was a funded development project to allow the import and export of personality data from RPM to a MS Excel Spreadsheet (.xls & .xlsx) for easier editing.

You might want to look in the OPTIONS AND DIRECTORY SETTINGS or TOOLS settings to see if that was finally incorporated.
