Default Hawaii State Patrol Patch

My name is Zac. I live in Albertville, Alabama. I collect patches from all over the US and would like a Hawaii State Police patch. Any help is appreciated.

Zac I'm not sure if you know, so I'll tell you. Hawaii doesn't have a "State Police" or "State Patrol." The closest thing to it is the Hawaii Office of the Sheriff. I believe each island has a primary law enforcement agency (ex. Oahu's is the Honolulu PD) that handles calls for service, accidents, etc. The Sheriff's Office handles things like civil papers, court process, etc. I have seen a patch for them in some past publication. Hope this helps.

Try eBay. They have a ton of patches.

Wouldn't this be the Sheriffs Office for Hawaii County, the Big Island in this case?

No it's the Hawaii State Sheriff's Office, part of the Hawaii Department of Public Safety. They provide the same law enforcement service as most other states Sheriff's departments but on a Statewide level.

The individual County Police departments provide law enforcement to each island on a county and municipality level.

Just a bit different from the norm.

Thank you, it is different from the norm. I was given a website on the other thread in this Hawaii forum that explains it a bit more.

When I was on the Big Island in 1994 in Kona, it looked like law enforcement officers were driving their personal cars rather than having an agency car. I don't remember why it looked like this other than the image in my mind of something like a Camero with a copper or rust color with a light on the dash and mag mount antennas. I think it had magnetic shields on the doors. Other than that I don't remember seeing anything like traditional police vehicles such as black and whites. This was different from the "norm" also, but the norm is for the mainland I suppose and in Hawaii the "norm" is something different. Part of the reason I like to travel.

Can anyone verify or enlighten me on this police vehicle situation?

Not exactly sure why they use their personal vehicles but you are correct, they use their personal vehicles for patrol. They all have a big blue strobe light on the top which is the only way to tell it's a police car other than the uniformed officer driving. I have seen a couple of marked units in the Hilo area but that's it.

I believe the County of Hawaii is the only one where they use their personal vehicles. I've seen marked Maui, Kauai and Honolulu County cars on the other islands.

Default Oahu cars

When I was stationed on Oahu 86-89, the PD used personal cars except there were some typical black and whites in downtown Honolulu. Certainly could be different now. Was interesting to watch the metro traffic cops do two-wheel maneuvers on their trikes in the downtown and Hotel street area.

I lived on Oahu a few years ago. A big reason for driving personal vehicles is space. There are already tons of cars in HI, especially on Oahu. Why have more cars than necessary? That and the govt is basically broke (corrupt even) and probably doesn't want a huge fleet to maintain. On Oahu it seemed like there were just as many marked as personal vehicles. Late model Camaros were quite popular choices for personal vehicles. The trikes are still running around in Waikiki.

The trikes are no longer in service with HPD. What you see are the meter maids. In fact the trike things are now at the University of Hawaii. Some officers are now allowed to take their blue and whites home.

i was born and raised on the big island. you're right.. they dont have a big enough budget to maintain a fleet. they basically give you an allowance for your car with certain restrictions on what kind of gas mileage it gets, etc. then give you a strobe and a radio to put in it. they have a couple of blue and whites in Kona such as a van, and a jeep, etc, and i was even surprised to see one officer went out and bought a crown vic police intercepter version but thats about it. its just funny how people over here in california freak out when they're speeding and they see and unmarked crown vic next to them.. when on the big island you dont even know if the ford bronco behind you is PD or not.. especially now, as i have noticed alot of officers dont even use the roof strobe and have been mostly using those dash mount strobes.
