Default 'Pirate Radio' movie

Doing some channel surfing this morning before I left for work, I see someone is making a movie called 'Pirate Radio' that is supposed to be based on actual events, according to the announcement. It's supposed to be out Nov.13

The snippets suggest that the movie will deal with the British or Dutch offshore radio scene in the 70s. How close to reality this will be is open to debate, I suppose, unless this is going to be some sort of docu-drama. Those of us that were at the last couple of Winterfests in Pennsylvania got a good dose of the reality of this scene, as there were some very informative presentations (with lots of slides and even some off-air recordings) on the subject.

Look for "The Boat That Rocked" for the full version. The US version has been heavily edited. Great movie!

Hi

Its been out in the UK some months as "The Boat That Rocked".

Its pure fantasy but of great interest to radio anoraks, and others for its good soundrack. Its a good yarn.

Its based on UK radio in 1967. In 1967 The Marine etc Broadcasting Act closed most of the UK offshore "Pirate" radio stations (the term is a misnomer as they weren't illegal until then).

UK music radio before these stations started in 64 was almost non-existant (maybe an hour a day).

14 August 1967 was the saddest day in millions of UK teenagers lives as most stations had to close. There were 25 million listeners who lost their music, only Radio Caroline continued until '68.

In September 1967 the government brought in BBC Radio 1 which millions of UK teenagers who loved the pirates boycotted in protest, took years for many to accept the status quo.

There were later stations off Holland and the UK but '64-'67 was the peak when money was made. Caroline returned and is now an internet and satellite delivered station broadcasting from land.

Many UK press reviews are written by those where not alive at the time, and there is a lot of misconception about those heady days of radio. The film shows teenagers crying in the streets, that did happen!! Those stations are never forgotten by many.

So enjoy the fantasy, its a good movie.

This might be a bit off topic, but the trailer for "pirate radio" reminded me of an older movie which you guys might like? It starred Christian Slater called "Pump up the volume" Another pirate radio comedy! It came out in the 90's I think.

If this is actually about Pirate Radio and not a love story about how Ben Affleck got together with Jennifer Alliston because he heard a commercial on an AM station or something lame like that then I am all over it.
