Serious insomnia here tonight!

Icom R75 + 150 ft random wire. Major heat wave today, 40F+ so no working on the ICE BOG antenna.

Times irrelevant, all between 0700 and 1000z.

Good morse code practice.
(Don't worry, all copy/paste below!)

Couple of questions:
does your R75 have any mod to the LW/MW circuitry to bypass or eliminate attenuator?

how does 245 YZE Gore Bay sound at your QTH ? It pounds in here (Rochester Michigan) stronger
than the local NDBs... perhaps because the path is mostly over water.

That's impressive.. Especially logging Churchill and Lynn Lake. I'm closer to them than you and haven't managed to hear them yet.. Perhaps tonight :)

I have a 5 year log and I'm only at 97 stations. Of course, the more you listen the more you hear the same stations over and over.

I have heard some of these on my Drake receiver. Are these used for navigation, or just what is the purpose of these beacons?

Yes, generally aircraft navigation... higher power NDB's are used for enroute navigation, in more remote areas, while lower power NDB's are used as an instrument approach (or additional navaid) to an airport.

When I first got the R75 I was not happy with longwave performance, but once I gave it 75 ft or more of wire, then it seems to hear just fine. For example, I can hear some stations on my 32 ft long 20 meter dipole, but with my current 150 ft random wire, sigs are plenty strong ... dropping off down around 200 khz ... yet I can hear WWVH at 60khz and Loran-C on 100khz. With a decent antenna for LW or MW, I don't believe there is any need to modify the R75 for DXing purposes.

I'd have to turn my computer off and unplug the charger to check YZE right now (BIG noise generator), but many of the Canadian beacons are VERY loud here at night. :)

OK, so I tried tonight. (It's been a while). Three of these are 'first time heard' for me.

Here's what I managed to log for Feb 01/16 between 01:30 to 02:00 UTC

201 ZWN Winnipeg - Assiniboia Downs, MB
207 YNE Norway House, MB
208 YSK Sanikiluaq, NU
209 IB Atikokan, ON
215 ZWW Winnipeg - Assiniboia, MB
218 RL Red Lake, ON
234 DN Dauphin, MB
233 BR Brandon, MB
236 ZHT Winnipeg - Forks, MB
239 OJ High Level, AB
244 TH Thompson, MB
250 FO Flin Flon, MB
269 UDE Delta, MB
275 AV Winnipeg - St Andrews, MB
287 ZWG Winnipeg - Stoney, MB
326 YKQ Kenora, ON
328 YTL Big Trout Lake, ON
329 YHN Hornepayne, ON
332 QT Thunder Bay, ON
335 YLD Chapleau, ON
336 LF La Salle, MB
338 YPX Puvirnituq, QC (Longest haul - 1048 miles)
341 YYU Kapuskasing, ON
346 YXL Sioux Lookout, ON
353 IN International Falls, MN
353 PG Portage La Prairie, MB
355 BKU Baker, MT
360 SW Warroad, MN
365 AA Fargo, ND
369 VX Dafoe, SK
370 YBV Berens River, MB
375 BM Balmoral, MB
382 YPL Pickle Lake, ON
385 QV Yorkton, SK
399 ZHD Dryden, ON
400 CKN Crookston, MN

This was using an 80 Meter inverted Vee.. I had a full length 160 Meter OFC dipole (260 feet long) that worked a bit better on MW, but it's down right now.

OK, tnx for the info on the R75.

YZE is about 250 miles from here and is loud night and day.

Anyway, you have an impressive list of NDBs for a one night session. :)

I get a kick out of hearing those far northerly beacons. There's no other radio to be heard out of those places so I enjoy looking to see where they are. I need to start a map. :)

Exactly, it is amazing to look them up on a map. No road or rail connection to anywhere, access only by air. Reminds me of the TV show "Ice Pilots".

Nice list. Heard a couple new for me Manitoba stations last week: 244 TH Thompson and 305 YQ Churchill from my Michigan QTH. A lot of ur Ontario logs are usually heard here as well.
