Default prepurchase research question

Hi folks.
This is my first post to the HF group.
I received a Uniden 396 vhf scanner for christmas and I love it particularly for it's computer control capability. I also own a Grundig Satellit 700 from around the early ninety's that I used to listen to quite frequently but have drifted away from SW monitoring.
I would like to get back into SW monitoring and am looking for a good computer controlled SW receiver.
I have been doing some research on the TenTech RX320D and this appears to be what I am looking for. It is in the right price range and I love the versatility or ability of being upgraded via the computer. I also like all of the favorable reviews I have seen.
My question is: is this unit comparable to or better than the Satellit 700?
If it is better than this seems to be what I am looking for. If it is about the same,I would have to question spending $300.00 plus dollars for something that I already have,(with the exception of the computer control).
I know I'm not comparing apples to apples but I have seen it compared to the Satellit 800 but not the 700.
My primary interest used to be utility stations but I know they have went predominantly digital. How is the RX320D for receiving the remaining utes.?
I know SW is heavily dependant on antenna performance and I'm not real happy with my current active antenna, as it predictably amplifies the noise along with the signal.
So I will be utilizing a different setup with any new receiver I purchase. This should pull in the weaker signals as well as negate any potential noise/interferrence from the computer.
Once again, my question is: pound for pound which would be the better option the existing Satellit 700 or the RX320D ?
Thanks for any and all guidance on this subject.

As you say, that's a difficult question to answer - most of what I would say about the 320 has already been said in this thread...(even though it was discussing tabletops, it's still valid)

You are quite correct about the antenna being the other side of the equation here. A lot of folks use active antennas- and unfortunately don't use them properly. The better ones have an adjustable gain control - you always want to boost the signal only up to the level of intelligibility and no higher - anything else, and you amplify more noise than signal. That takes experience and a good ear to determine.

The 320 is superb for utilities. There are a great many voice stations still on the air, and the 320 will do the digital modes - those that can be decoded, anyway - very easily. I've been using the 320 for years, and had very little trouble with most of the modes (except HF FAX, and that's only because I haven't been able to properly calibrate the soundcard, it's so damn cheap...). Perhaps the big plus with the Satellit is that it doesn't need a PC to work, so it's liable to be inherently quieter than the 320. However, the edge in selectivity goes to the 320 very clearly, as is the ability to build nearly an unlimited number of files to fit whatever you want to try to hear.

Most all the RTTY news services are gone to satellite, contrary to what you might see and read in other publications. But there's still quite a lot to hear and see - if you want to get back into the Utility game, the Utility DXers Forum on Yahoo took the place of the WUN which closed down this past April.

And as for antennas - well, be a bit more specific. It sounds like you might be a cave dweller, but I could be way off base here.....73s Mike

Thanks for the reply ka3jjz.
I had been reading all the posts here in the past few weeks and that is what piqued my interest in this model. It looks more and more like I will be purchasling one in the near future. I am also awaiting approval from the moderator of the Yahoo group for this model so I can do some further research.
As far as the antenna goes. It is a Datong model IB8,(I believe). I can't find the specs. on it right now but you are right, it does not have adjustable gain control. It's either on or off.
I bought this way back when I lived in a row house in Balto. city. Now that I live up in Carroll county near the Pennsylvania border, I've got a little more room to play around with longwire's and such along with the benefit of being in not such a signal crowded area.

We have lots of antenna links in our HF Antennas wiki article. Be sure to check them out. Of course, it's a bit nippy to be stringing antennas in 40 degree weather - I've done it - but it can be done

Anyway, just to sink the hook a little bit, here are some links to 320 compatible software. There are others, of course, but these seem to be the ones most folks use - some free, some commercial...
  • Sadly the gentleman that was the author of Shortwave Log decided to pull the plug. But at least this SW Log Users Group on Yahoo continues, and it's likely you can get an installation package here

Once you get cleared to the RX320 Yahoo group, go to the links section and check out the folders there. There are MANY support and application programs for this little black box.

Thanks again ka3jjz
I had received clearance to the Yahoo group but haven't had a chance yet to check them out. As far as stringing up an antenna in 40 degree weather goes it wouldn't bother me. I like winter and cold weather. It's the heat and humidity of summer that does me in.
Thanks for the links, I'll check them out when I get some free time. I found a site that offers the RX320D along with their software and the "Dream" software as a package for around $385.00 dollars. www.dxtra.com
This "looks" like a good package deal.
