Here is the review on this radio at eHam.com
I dont own one personally, but as a part time Icom dealer, I think all the Icom LMR radios are great, but I guess Im a bit partial!
Thing I like about the Icoms, you can legitimately own the software, without getting a ripped copy, or having to pay a license fee.
With the software, the radio is VERY flexable, so you can set it up just about any way you want.

Good luck.

Default F-521 is great!

I use 521's in my buses which are used for transporting wildland firefighters. Each fire incident has a different group of frequencies involving federal, state and local fire units. These radios give us the option of field programming the unique needs of each fire camp. Our field managers carry lap-tops to program these radios. They are also installed in field managers trucks and service trucks. I also use a 521 as my base hobby scanner while at home. It gives better performance than any scanner I have ever used.

We also use them for company frequencies and program them (transmit disabled, of course) for police scanning when going over-the-road between incidents (thank God for RR data-base). I even have 2 meter amatuer programmed in the F-521 installed in my personal vehicle. The 521 is capable of both three different power transmit levels, wide and narrow band coverage and has many other options. The price is right and we have not had one instance of failure even though these radios get plenty of rough use. We partner them with F-30 handhelds and are very satisfied with the results.

Bottom line = You can not get a better radio for the investment.
