Icom IC-A22 power / battery question

I have a A22 for use as a backup in-flight. I seem to have lost/misplaced the charger that came with it. I'm looking for another charger OEM to purchase for it.

In the mean time .... I noticed the AC charger for my laptop fits and powers the A22 (before freaking out ..... it turned it on under AC power for less than a second.)

Can someone who knows something about battery charging / power let me know if it is safe to charge the radio with this charger, or what information I would need to see if safe?

You did not supply enough info for anyone to answer your question.

According to the A22 owners manual the supplied wall charger is a BM-112U
and it is supposed to be plugged in for charging for about 15 hours but for some
strange reason the manual does not state the specs on this wall charger so I
have no idea what the voltage/current specs are on it.

We would also need to know the specs on this laptop charger which you failed to
mention.

I am not very well versed on power supplies, which is why i'm asking for help, and i appreciate the quick reply.

Laptop Charger:

input: 100-200V ~ 1.9A 50/60Hz

output: 16V --- 4.5A


The only info i can find on the unit:

Ni-CD Battery Pack
CM-166

12V 600mAh

I found a reference on the internet saying that the BM-112U is rated at 12VDC 300mA

That 300 mA (milliamps) translates to 0.3A (amps) and your laptop PS is overkill at the 4.5 Amps. The A22 is spec'ed at 12-15Vdc maximum so the 16Vdc is also over that limit.

Best to stick to the original equipment as the charging time will be determined by that original wall transformer and the current rating of it (not overheating the batteries in the process). If you upgraded the transceivers battery to a higher capacity that may change (increase) the charge time of course.

In the past I have acquired some on ebay and some for other icom radios will work
but you must make sure the plug type and DC voltage polarity is the same or be
willing to install the correct size plug.
