Question Icom F5021 Programming

A friend of mine is asking for help programming this radio. I have no familiarity with it. Can it be programmed via the radio without using a computer. If not, is this, ICOM F5021/6021 Accessories : The Antenna Farm :: , Your Two Way Radio Source!, the correct or preferred software and cable?

To program the radio you will need that software, the link you included is correct.

Some radios have options for making minor programming changes via the front panel with some special key press sequences. My old Icom F-2020 had a way to do that. It didn't let you change all the options, just a few. To do things like setting channel names, key assignments, etc, you will need to use the programming software and the cable. You -might- be able to find a cheaper cable on e-Bay, but they are usually not factory, and some of them are low quality. Since it is not your radio, I'd make sure you use the correct stuff to prevent any problems. The price at Antenna Farm is reasonable.

Some of those Icoms can flashed for field programming. Called dealer mode.
It pretty much just lets you change the freqs/tones/alpha tags but not much else. You'll need to devote a PF button to it and as it is there never seem to be enough PF buttons. And of course then it loses it part 90 cert I think.

And, you would still need the programming software to kick it into dealer mode.

Correct, except it actually doesn't take up an extra PF key. The dealer mode is entered by pressing a combination of buttons while powering the radio on.

As mmckenna said, you will need to initially program the radio with software to enable dealer mode. In addition, you will also have to enable a hidden tab in the software, to get to the screen where you enable dealer mode.

I'm programming one now. There is no dealer mode, just a user set mode where a few seldom changed things like squelch setting, beeps, mic gain can be set. The programming software (got mine from the antennafarm) is needed for zone, channel and key assignments. It is fairly easy except I can't figure out how to delete a zone or channel once added. Nice little radio.

The F5021, and as far as I know, all newer generation Icom radios do have a dealer mode where basic channel information (TX/RX freq, PL/DPL, bandwidth and name) can be edited from the radio itself. It is in addition to the user set mode, which is also available on older series radios. Activating it involves accessing a hidden part of the programming software, enabling the dealer mode there, writing the new programming to the radio, and holding down two buttons while powering the radio on to actually access the dealer mode on the radio. Google "Icom maker reserved" if you want more info.
(Note: If you do this, make sure you first read the exact radio you are going to write to before you enter the maker reserved mode, and do not change any settings in that area other than the one necessary)

To answer your question about deleting channels and zones, it is a fairly simple process. To delete a channel, simply highlight it and press delete. To delete a zone, just delete all channels in that zone.

Thanks, Avery93. Deleting the channels and zones worked fine.
I found this location for a different radio to enable dealer mode Maker Reserved CS-F30G Rev 1.0 - UHFworld Forum
and the procedure listed there worked for the F5021 also.

Now if I could figure out how to eliminate the CH9 & CH16 from the IC-M88 LAND CH mode, I'd be a happy camper.
