Question Problem With My Icom IC-R71E Receiver

Hi i just bought a IC-R71E receiver and when i went to look at before i bought it it seemed to be fine
so i brought it home pluged it in and it looked fine for around 20 mins

Then it just switched its self of and there was a burning smell around the ac power pack so i pulled it apart and a fuze had gone i repaced it with a 2A and that blew up so i added a 3A and it stays on now so i think that was down to rain getting in when i left his house with it to go to the car

Anyway now it stays on all the numbers are out of range and theres a buzzing sound from the frount display transformer and only low audio in FM the tuning knob clockwise only moves the numbers up once and works antyclockwise

So after reading for hours on the net it pointed me to a faulty battery on the ramboard as it gives all the same symptoms but i checked the battery and its showing 2.9v its ment to be 3.5v so do you think like i do that the ramboard is at fault

cheers

I don't have anything productive to offer you I immediately felt bad when I read "burning smell" as to me that could mean an entire circuit frying without the benefit of that fuse link. How wet did you get the radio that day? The burning smell to me means a full dose of voltage got at the wrong spots and got them hot enough to burn. I at least hope someone with decent tech knowledge will come here and pick your brain to get at an answer.

Hi i dont think it was down to the rain now as i found the function button led flowting around in the front pannel so im guiesing that has shorted something out

But with a short and a burning smell comes components that can be seen to be gone but i just dont see anything :-(

I have orded the replacment ram board from here Roberto Nardo, IK2RND's Replacement ICOM RAM Board for ICOM amateur radios of Roberto but he said he cant post untill the 10th so i will have to wate to find out if it is the ram board thats making trubble for me

It's not the ram board, that only takes a very small current micro amps. You really need to take it to a repair company, seeing you live in the UK ring Icom they are very helpful & it's still a reciever worth fixing.I replace the RAM battery on mine before it failed,it was running ok but had 2.6 volts, still held the operating system ok.Good Luck.
