Icom's programming, and operation is a quagmire! The IC-R1 gave me a headache every time I used it.

Curious as to wether I should keep it or sell the scanner, this one is the unlocked model but it seems so tiny I almost need a magnifier to read the buttons although I have our local sheriff programed and sounds really nice.

Cool

Well, I think it's about 15 years old or more. Technology has changed quite a bit especially with battery life. The Icom RX7 isn't a bad scanner for the money. The R20 is better but it costs a lot more. (The R20 has USB/LSB support where the RX7 does not.) Difference is $200 versus $520 at current pricing. (The R20 also has a much wider frequency range.)

BTW, any new radio should have equal or better audio quality / reception compared to the R1.

One more question, when I purchased this radio used I was told that it was un-blocked how can this be determined as I am going to put it on Epay as I do not use it.

Cool

It's definitely unblocked. Punch in 827mhz to verify.
