A long while ago I bought a Comet SMA501 antenna for my ICOM IC-R2 scanner.

I actually know very little about both these items but trying to gain more knowledge and am reviewing Rich Wells "IC-R2 Owners Manual" now.

In general terms, what type of reception would the Comet SMA501 provide for the IC-R2 ?

Not very much. It is a 3" antenna. Don't know what you are planning on listening to on the R-2.
Maybe you can let us know so we can help.

I got a clone, local reception using repeater.
I use it when I need to be discreet in close proximity.

I used to use that combination to listen to airband while at the airport. It was only really good for situations like that, or if you are near a strong transmitter.

Would this work with an hp1?

Don't count on it. Most shorties are a compromise. If you are right under the repeater or antenna would be ok. Otherwise, there are a lot better solutions that have been discussed on various threads.
