A New Haven man was taken into custody early Sunday afternoon after allegedly "displaying" a pistol at an Illinois State Police trooper.
State police at Carmi identified him as Brandon S. Smith, 31. He was charged in Gallatin County with aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated assault, no FOID card, and forcible detention, police said and was taken to the jail in Carmi pending court proceedings in Shawneetown.
State police issued a news release later Sunday afternoon about the "suicidal, barricaded subject," asserting that the incident began about 2 a.m.Sunday at 161 Franklin st. in New Haven.
Troopers responded to a report of a suicidal subject with a gun. Upon their arrival, Smith "displayed a pistol at the trooper," the news release said.
"The residence was also occupied by family members of the suspect, who were later evacuated."
"An Illinois State Police SWAT team, along with hostage negotiators, responded to the scene. Negotiations continued until the suspect was apprehended by SWAT team members at approximately 12:18 p.m. without incident," said a state police statement.
