ROMEOVILLE -- When Romeoville's new police station opens next year, it will be stocked with $1.6 million in state-of-the-art radio equipment under a deal approved Wednesday by the Romeoville Village Board.
The price tag includes 35 portable radios for police, fire and emergency management staff, an alert system, backup systems and a 160-foot tower. Motorola will be providing the equipment.
Dated equipment
Police Chief Andy Barto told the board that they are currently working with equipment that is anywhere from 20 to 25 years old, and they have had problems losing contact with officers when they are in the field.
Funding will come from a $6 million fund being held in reserve for items needed for the new village hall/police station, currently under construction and expected to be completed in May 2010.
The $6 million is part of a $47 million bond sale approved by voters in 2007.
'Safety for guys on street'
"This the only way to fund it," said Village Manager Steve Gulden, who added that they would do without some items planned for the new building because the radio equipment is more important.
The equipment upgrade will also help the village comply with a Federal Communications Commission mandate that all agencies switch to a narrow band system by 2013, Barto said.
"This is for the safety of the guys on the street," Mayor John Noak said. "This is a great investment for the future and very critical for the community."
