For both the 2006 and 2007 "Unofficial" days, I listened to the scanner and didn’t hear as many interesting calls as one would expect. Nevertheless, I will listen again this year for the now 2-day event. I posted what I listened to last year here. Champaign PD 453.400 and U of I PD 453.250 were the best two to listen to (I didn’t hear anything good on 453.900 Urbana PD) in 2007.

For this year, I’ve read that Champaign, U of I, Urbana PDs and the State Police will be patrolling during the event and they say they will have a big police presence. Also, I read that the Assembly Hall security will be providing security to campus buildings to make sure no drunks disrupt the school day.

Here is what I plan to monitor (your ideas are welcome):
*MDICE (ID search mode)
*Starcom21 (ID search mode)
*City of Champaign TRS
*155.055 IREACH CSQ
*453.900 METCAD 3 118.8
*453.975 METCAD 2 118.8
*453.400 Champaign PD 118.8
*155.655 Urbana PD tac 107.2
*462.950 PRO Ambulance 186.2
*462.975 Arrow Ambulance 179.9
*155.340 MERCI 186.2
*155.340 MERCI 210.7
*453.250 METCAD 5 118.8
*463.350 Assembly Hall Security 506
*154.070 METRO FIRE DISPATCH 131.8
*155.475 ISPERN CSQ

If you find other frequencies/talkgroups active please let us know.

The only confirmed activity related to Unofficial has been on MDICE 'INCIDENT 4'. CPD officers have been on there and I believe I heard a few U of I PD units as well.

I also put 453.600 (173.8) U of I Residence Halls in my scanner in case there are problems in the dorms.

2011 Unofficial will be on Friday

Unofficial will be this Friday, March 4. I expect the usual event talkgroups to be in use. I'll post updates to the wiki page where past Unofficial scanner notes are listed too.

I was going to start a thread asking if anyone had any special info on this. Should be fun listening. Maybe I will even walk over toward campus for a good laugh and to see exactly which agencies are there.

One question involving METCAD. Do all communications go thru a repeater? No simplex?

Also, think they will use ISPERN at all?

When the fire department was testing their radios before the switch to MDICE they mentioned having a simplex channel but that's all I've heard mentioned about any. They probably have the ITAC 800 MHz channels in there too.

I don't expect them use ISPERN. If it's like other years, they'll patch MDICE to Starcom21 so the state and local officers can work together. I saw that the Assembly Hall security will help keep drunks out of the large lecture halls again so check their frequencies too. I'd also check the city and university parking channels and the 453.600 173.8 residence hall channel. I can't pick up the University UHF channels at work so keep me posted if you hear anything on them.

The following police agencies normally help out: U of I PD, Urbana PD, Champaign PD, Illinois State Police, Champaign county Sheriff's Office, and Parkland College PD. Pro Ambulance is usually the ambulance since they Cover Medic 1 calls during this time period but Arrow Ambulance backfills. I know last year Champaign Fire Department had a building inspector checking occupancies. Champaign FD and Urbana FD had units running campus calls. I will be monitoring from work so I will post stuff as it becomes available.

Hearing these...
INCIDENT 4 - pd
ISP D10 Detail A (patched with INCIDENT 4)
FIRE DISP, FIRE OPS 1 and PRO OPS 1 talkgroups for medical calls

I haven't heard the Champaign fire inspectors yet.

Usually they have a Medic Unit staged in the campus area along with an Engine usually Eng 254 or Squad 171, during the evening . because of the mass of calls coming in.

Just heard a fire call that all the alarms were sounding in the building and the music was so loud that no occupants had even evacuated or heard anything. Ridiculous !!!!!!

Fire Inspectors are contacting METCAD on Incident 4 and Fire Ops 1, and communicating occupancy violations to police on Incident 4.

Inspector Units are CFD 115 and CFD 119

What type of units are 7K1 and 7K2?

Also is the activity on Starcom TG 4551 related to Unofficial? Heard them mention Colonial Pantry. The database lists this as a Dept of Revenue TG.

The units for the colonial pantry are probably doing liquor sales compliance checks. I believe the 7k units are state police special units. Not sure though. I am recording all comms so I will have more specifics tomorrow. The news gazette has an ongoing news story online, lots of good information.

Could this be Parkland College pd?

I've heard the 7K units even back when CPD was on 453.400. These could be CPD command officers.

Was there anything on Starcom21 other than Detail A? I didn't get a chance to listen to it until 8pm and when I did, my scanner kept stopping on Incident 4/Detail A so it was hard to search. Anyone hear ISP throughout the event? I never heard them on Incident 4/Detail A.

My scanner didn't even leave incident 4 the whole night, except for the occasional fire dispatch or medical call. Didn't hear the starcom patch at all. With all the agencies out about all day I'm sure that state troopers were communicating to someone.

They were patched on ISP D10 Detail A and Incident 4. Heard multiple District 10 (X-Units) on the radio.

"K" Units are chief’s, you will hear this frequently with the smaller Police Departments e.g. 6-K-5 or 6-K-22. Specifically 7-K-1 is Chief Finney and 7-K-2 is one of the Deputy Chief's, I am think it is DC Daniels but I am not sure.
