Exclamation Radio Burglary at Huntingburg, IN Rail Yard

Huntingburg: On Wednesday, September 3, Indiana State Police were called to the Norfolk Southern Rail Yard, in Huntingburg to assist the Norfolk Southern Railroad Police and the FBI with a burglary.

Preliminary investigation revealed that on August 31, between 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. an unknown person or persons illegally entered the rail yard property. Once on the property they entered the yard office and forced entry into lockers stealing approximately $7,500 in items. The items included two Motorola and four Kenwood portable two-way radios and three switch keys.

Special Agent Hartman, with the Norfolk Southern Railroad Police, said that a dark blue mini-van believed to be a GMC, driven by a white male described as being small build with dark hair was reported to be in the area around the time of the incident acting suspicious. Hartman also stated that the van could possibly have white stripes.

“Locating these items is crucial for the security and integrity of the rail system,” said Hartman.

Investigators are asking anyone that might have seen anything unusual around the rail yard or anyone that has information about this burglary to call the Norfolk Southern Railroad Police Communications Center at 800-453-2530 or the Indiana State Police Jasper Post at (812) 482-1441 or (800) 742-7475 (in state only).

I would not ready too much into this...... Switch keys are RARELY if ever changed.... I would wager I guess that the keys have never been changed since the Southern Railway put them on and every retiree has plenty. You can get them on ebay.

NOW I do -not- condone theft. This is PLAIN an evil act. No getting around that.

As to threat to rail infrastructure? Doubtful at best. All those locks can be cut with standard bolt cutters anyway.....

Knowing NS though, they are hot under the collar about this... rightfully so... but NS as opposed to other railroads will take this one a LOT further... expect a lot of company resources to be devoted to this... Railroads have fully sworn in lawmen.. and expect a witchhunt over this.
