Thumbs up IFD getting Automated Dispatch

This is for all of us who listen to IFD for Dispatch of County Fire and IFD. WRTV Channel 6 News is reporting that in 4-6 weeks we will no longer be hearing a" Live Dispatch" dispatching runs according to Jack Rinehart reported today at 6PM on 4-16-09 Thursday. This was the second story on the 6PM Newscast. In 4 to 6 weeks we will be hearing a "Female Voice" that will be dispatching the runs to all Marion County/IFD Fire stations.Jack Rinhart also reported that a more "Softer Tone" will be heard going off at the stations.Jack also reported that the new system will be able to Open doors for the trucks to roll out of the station and will also be able to"Turn off the stove in the Kitchen" if crews are dispatched out and the have food cooking on the stove.Big changes and we will have to get used to hearing this.Thought I would share this infomation with everyone so when you hear a "Automated Voice for Disptach" instead of a "Live Dispatch" you heard it here first! Default High-Tech Alerts To Save Firefighters Time, Stress Automated System Will Be More Cons

High-Tech Alerts To Save Firefighters Time, Stress - Indiana News Story - WRTV Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS -- A state-of-the-art automated dispatch system will soon help firefighters save precious seconds when they respond to calls, Indianapolis Fire Department officials said.

The $1.1 million radio system is still about four to six weeks out, but the department has already begun testing the automated calls, 6News' Jack Rinehart reported.

The calm, female voice is generated by what operators type into the computer system, which enables them to save time and dispatch multiple crews at once.

"This system, over a few seconds, could literally send 70 different fire stations out on different calls," said IFD spokesman Tim Baughman.

It will also lend consistency to the firefighters who, in the past, may have had to interpret messages from four different dispatchers during their shift. Another benefit for firefighters is the elimination of the old, blaring alert tone.

"The new tone is a heart-friendly tone. It starts at a low tone and actually ramps up to a higher tone, which is more friendly to the stress of the firefighters," Baughman said.

The high-tech system will eventually be able to turn the lights on and off at different firehouses, open the firehouse doors and even shut off the stove if firefighters need to leave for a run.

IFD dispatched 120,000 runs last year.

Will this "calm and friendly" female voice just go out over the regular dispatch talkgroup?
