Indystar - High-powered guns stolen from FBI vehicle

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The FBI wants its stolen guns back.

The agency on Friday offered a $5,000 reward for information about whoever took the FBI SWAT agent's high-powered guns after breaking into a government vehicle parked in a neighborhood on the northwest side of Indianapolis.

Among the items taken was a submachine gun, a semiautomatic rifle, .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun and two sets of body armor. The theft was discovered Thursday morning.

Small difference.

The agent is probably in just a little trouble, and depending on the circumstances may or may not get another chance to lose another weapon.

The private gun owner just says "oops, My bad" and as soon as the insurance check shows up, goes out and buys a replacement.

So where were these weapons? in the backseat in plain view? If not, if they were hidden, someone was knowingly scoping out a federal vehicle. Probably an inside job. I wonder if they were stupid enough to leave prints behind, would they do DNA analysis for something like this?

If memory serves me, I read where the weapons were stored in a locked box that was also chained. And I do believe that is the Bureau's recommended method when storing weapons in the vehicle.

$5,000 Reward Offered in Search for Stolen FBI Weapons and Equipment

Michael S. Welch, Special Agent in Charge of the Indianapolis Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), announced today that a reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information leading to the identification and arrest of individual(s) responsible for the theft of FBI weapons and equipment from a government vehicle parked in a residential neighborhood in northwest Indianapolis, Indiana. This theft took place between the evening hours of September 16, 2009 and the early morning of September 17, 2009. During this same time period and within the general area, an additional 10 vehicles and/or residences were broken into.

The reward is also being offered for information concerning the location and return of three stolen weapons. The stolen weapons are described as an H & K MP5/10A3 10 mm gun, a Rock River Arms LAR15 rifle, and a Springfield 1911A1 .45 caliber handgun. Additionally, a large green duffel-style gear bag was stolen which contained an FBI SWAT uniform and two sets of body armor, green in color, one set having FBI letters displayed on the front and back.

The FBI, along with Agents and Officers of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (BATFE), the Indiana State Police (ISP), and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), are jointly investigating this matter.

Anyone with information regarding the above is asked to contact the Indianapolis Office of the FBI at (317) 639-3301.

From: 93.1 WIBC
IMPD Lt. Jeff Duhamell says the agent followed protocol by storing the weapons in a chained lockbox.
The suspects are described as black men wearing hoodies and driving a dark Toyota SUV.

Nice weapons. Wonder if the G vehicle had a car alarm.

Didn't this happen a few years ago in Indy area too.

An alarm would have helped... ISP cars used to have alarms.
Too bad somebody didn't call when the suspicious vehicle was in the neighborhood, and somebody might have, but if like most places if you call dispatch... they just don't care or dispatch a unit to check it out.
