Default SAFE-T Compatable HTs?

One of my neighbors is a Volunteer Fireman who works closely with the county EMA. They've started the process of switching to the SAFE-T system around here, according to him - they are working out budget issues to buy the HTs they're going to use, which I understand are going to be purchased from RA-Comm.

Is there a list somewhere that tells what models of handheld radio will work with SAFE-T? He'd be buying his own, so budget would be a consideration..

Thanks!

You can try looking at the lists of Motorola and EFJ radios at:

IPSC: User Equipment & QPAs

I believe that you have to get exactly the right model with the correct options, flash, etc, in particular for the Motorolas as SAFE-T is a bit of an unusual system

Motorola XTS3000, XTS25000, XTS5000 Can all be programmed with the SAFE-T. As for what options your agency would need your radio shop would be the one to do that for you.

Excellent information, guys! Thank you!

Just to clarify, though - I'd have to find one of these that works specifically with 800 frequencies, right? A VHF or 450 UHF can't be programmed to run with the 800 SAFE-T system, can it?

Correct. Further, an 800MHz radio must be exactly the right kind to work on the Motorola Smartnet system that makes up SAFET, it must be officially assigned a system ID, and must have exactly the right set of options installed.

And to clarify the SAFE-T is an SmartZone OmniLink, not an SmartNet. Smartnets are smaller local area trunking systems. The SAFE-T is a very large wide area trunking system made up up multiple SmartZones combined vias OmniLink technology.
