Default Need help with Digital or Analog Scanner for Lake Co.

I am looking to buy a mobile/desktop scanner and I live in Crown Point. I listen to Crown Point, Lake County, Merrillville, Gary, Lowell, and Cedar Lake. I was wondering if these cities are going to go digital in the near future 1-2 yrs or if they are using some digital communications now. I do not want to spend 400-500 on a scanner right now. I have a PRO-90 handheld right now and am looking at a mobile/desktop scanner.

Any help would be great,

Thanks

Joe.

I'm not familiar with that area, but it's always possible that agencies will switch to digital communications. With the state mandate for dispatch consolidation, I wouldn't be surprised to see agencies getting on SAFE-T. I wouldn't spend money on a non-digital scanner because it could become a paperweight at any time.

Looks like they already have talkgroups assigned for Crown Point, Munster and Lake County SD. All are digital so you would need at minimum a scanner like a PRO-96. If you want to listen to IL state police at all then your choice is limited to a scanner like the PRO-106 cause it does 700mhz. Used 96s can be bought on eBay for 250 or less and will do the job you are looking for.

I would spend the money and go digital. I heard they are working on a P25 system of their own. Don't know how long it will be, but they eventually will switch.
