story by: Corey Allan

BOONVILLE, IN - A faulty radio system for Warrick County emergency crews has left many dead zones across the county. A situation so bad dispatchers and deputies can sometimes barely make out what each other is saying.

However, the county plans to upgrade the system by adding two more towers and converting to an 800 megahertz radio system.

"There's a lot of areas…when you're on a portable radio and you just can't communicate," said Warrick County Sheriff's LT. Paul Weinzapfel.

Weinzapfel says most departments in surrounding counties already use an 800 MHz system, which gets calls faster than the county's current 400 MHz.

"Officers should have coverage anywhere in the county. And good coverage too," Weinzapfel said.

The project will cost over $1 million. The Warrick County Council has agreed to pay half the annual cost – about $60,000.

Equipment improvements will be seen, and heard, in about six months.

Are they switching to their own 800 system, or going onto SAFE-T?

SAFE-T. The state map is already showing a planned site for Warrick County.
