Umm, first, the Yaesu FT1802 is not legal to use on a public safety system.

Second, the 'paging' function of that unit has nothing to do with the type of tones used by fire systems for paging, it's a custom system of dual CTCSS tones sent to 'open' another Yaesu unit.

I heard that you can "tweak" radios to cover the bandwidth. Is this true and will it work for this radio?

The FT-1802 is a ham radio and is not designed for public service frequencies. The tones for alert have nothing to do with or will work with Fire Dept. tone outs.

Radios for use on public safety systems must be type accepted for that use by the FCC. (Part 90 certification).

Yours isn't. Using it anywhere but the ham bands to transmit is illegal. Even the MARS and CAP folks have stopped (mostly) allowing non-commercial gear. The ham gear, for one thing, doesn't meet the new 'narrow band' requirements coming shortly for all public safety. The fact that you can program frequencies into it is a good indication it won't comply. The FCC doesn't allow that function on legal radios, as it results in fools programming incorrect things into the radios and causing interference.

Yes, he did, in another of the FOUR posts he made of the same question, before the moderators combined some, he posted the transmit and receive channels in the 154 range he wanted to operate on. He's a (volunteer?) fireman, who wants to use a cheap, illegal radio on the fire system.

I suppose we could just look up the info on the township he's given, and contact his superiors directly, to let them know the fines and trouble he's trying to make them liable for, but I'd hoped he might take the hint and wise up to the fact he's not allowed to do this.

From his earlier post elsewhere: "I am trying to program Rx-154.379 and Tx-151.415", and, "I figured out how to program Rx and Tx frequencies but when I go to transmit"

Note that he's trying to program an incorrect frequency for receive, showing he is NOT someone who should be allowed to program a radio.

Haha, dude, what is your problem??? Like I said, I carry a permit for radio use and now that you have explained the law to me, I will get a new radio. You really shouldn't take such a negative tone in your replies. So, take a chill pill and I will get a new radio. Cool? K, glad to hear we could work out our differences.

That's the license for the North and South repeater system that everyone down here uses.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if someone tried to pass off the Yaesu radio to FF5479 as being able to work on the repeater system without explaining the (il)legalities of the situation. But who knows?

So - to my brother Firefighter from Morgan County...what Skip is trying to say is that those radios are designed to work on Amateur radio frequencies only, regardless of what little tweaks or mods are installed on them. The communications officer at your department should be able to steer you in the right direction as to finding a cost-effective radio for you to use on the fireground and with the repeater system. If you don't have a comm officer at your department, feel free to drop me an e-mail at kc9cqj(at)gmail.com and I'll hook you up with ours who can point you in the right direction.
