• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

The transmit and receive freqs are the same. No repeaters are allowed. The radios are limited to 2 watts.

Freqs are:
151.8200 narrowband
151.8800 narrowband
151.9400 narrowband
154.5700 wide or narrowband
154.6000 wide or narrowband

The last two are heavily used in urban areas by drivethrough fast food restaurants, etc.

That is what we did with our hunt camp radios. The MURS VHF radios have much better coverage than the UHF GMRS radio gear and we were using public safety type WT's.

What? do increase range? I think you cant exceed over 20ft or 60ft? i forgot but mmm

The FCC puts no restrictions on the amount of gain that a MURS antenna may have. The only restrictions are the antenna cannot be higher than 60 feet from the ground if free-standing or 20 feet higher than the structure it is mounted on.

Is it legal to program 2 watt MURS into a unit capable of 4 or 5 watts? I thought I heard it was not somewheres.
Just curious. If not illegal, then I am all good.
:)

I lowered my output just to be safe :D, i tested it out with one of my advisors and i made it atleast... 14 blocks from where he was and i was somewhat a quarter mile away though i know the max range is usually 3

I believe the units have to be specifically type accepted for MURS service to be legal.

MURS is great, I use a 7 element beam at 35 feet, and can talk to a friend at 20 miles with no problem...I talked to a distant station one time at 50 plus miles<believe it was skip>., but havent heard that station since, but they were using a beam also.

If you want your MURS questions, all of them, answered in one place, just do a Google search. There are several sites that all have this information, both in Q&A and FAQ forms.

as for legality on using non certified radios if you turn your power down to 2 Watts and stick to the 154 mhz MURS frequencies I don't think you would be harassed for using part 90 radios.

there are so few certified MURS radios in circulation that you have no choice but to use part 90 radios.

ianal though.

personally i see no reason for type certification requirement for MURS or GMRS when there are plenty of part 90 radios that meet the requirements for either service and so few radios specifically certified for part 95 MURS or GMRS.

But that is your tax dollars hard at work for you. not.
