Prior to trunking "Community Repeaters" were very popular especially with a variety of small businesses, such as plumbers, ac& heating, electricians, etc. All users shared a single repeater normally UHF; each user was assigned a unique CTCSS (PL) tone. All users would wait for the channel to become idle and they would take their turn conducting their business. It was a good alternative for a small business they usually owned or leased their individual radios and paid a small amount monthly per unit to the CR operator. Motorola operated numerous CR's around the country back in the 70's.
