Exclamation Intrinsically Safe Handheld

Hello fellow Radio Reference members,

I work at a sour oil & gas plant where we use a collection of Motorola HT1000s', Sabers' & Kenwood TK-2180s' on the VHF 136-174 MHz band to get the job done. They are all great radios, but I am looking for a personal that is intrinsically safe, and has the ability of "on the fly" or "front panel programming" much like a scanner for field work with contractors.

Any input would be appreciated, as I am for the most part lost in the world on industrial radio.

Thanks,

Mason

I'm not familiar with Canada's requirements for radio equipment, but you might check with Icom, Kenwood, and Yaesu. I know they all make radios that are intrinsically safe.

You need to find a FPP radio that takes a intrinsically safe battery. It's not the radio that is going to blow up in a gas leak or fire, it's the battery. One of the places I work at has IS radios, and their Moto vendor told me that as long as the battery is IS, it don't matter if the radio is.
