Buying a Motorola Digital 2way radio for listening ?

EDIT: I not just looking a Motorola radios it can be any brand.

If I had like a Motorola Digital radio.

and I programmed it with the the local police, fire, etc Freq. with is P25.


Would that work. I know I would have to program DEC,HEX, Alpha Tags etc. so I can hear what I want/


or am I thinking Way out of the box?





I know with a digital scanner set it to only hear Fire and not police if wanted.


I see Digital 2 way radios that will program in the 850Mhz same as my location.

Yes, you could purchase a p25 two way radio and program it to receive. It gets really tricky if they are on a trunking system though. If they are using encryption, you would not be able to hear them.

A p25 capable two way radio, of any brand, is going to be expensive, even if used. Used Motorola p25 radios are going for $700 or more on e-bay. In addition, you would have to have the programming cable and software.

It's almost always going to be cheaper and easier to go with a scanner.

What you're asking is not easily accomplished.
Buy a digital trunking scanner and you'll be just as happy!

From what I Read, it is simulcast TRS, and as for as the radio.

ASTRO SABER III 800MHz P25 AND DIGITAL - SABER AND ANTENNA ONLY | eBay,

and I even seen others, cheaper.
what some of us from the club here ( more like a friend and my self) we are looking into having one programmed ( by are self or find someone, ) so it will only RX and Not TX. and connect it to on line users. and even have it to R.R.

because with a scanner, it works 60% of the time around here, only hearing 50% of what someone said,

I know with the REAL police Radios, the ones that are programmed for them, you select one of the channels, you can hear only one, at a time, and that might be what we are looking for,

or if it would scan 2 or 3 channels, one for police and one for fire for example.

I know with a scanner, I can L/O talk Groups that I don't want to hear.


The main Idea behind this, is to bright it all online so anyone can hear it.

Head over to p25.ca, if you are really interested in using a radio, they will guide you on how, and what to do. There are even a few P-25 9600bd radios for sale there. Hands down better than any scanner on the market, especially for simulcast system. In simple terms scanners just plain suck on them. I got last year in Dayton a P-25 capable Astro Spectra for $100.00.

Digital scanner have their limits, especially when it comes to simulcast. A Motorola radio is just as easy to program as any GRE or Uniden. Systems that won't even tickle a scanners receiver, a Motorola receives the same system perfectly fine.

Anyways many people are interested in listening to a handful of TGs, where the Motorola will blow smoke around any GRE or Uniden.

I say DON'T buy a scanner, they stink compared to a real radio.

Keep telling people to buy a scanner n9zas, you must have stock in Uniden, Inc.

No, just not too interested in having my xts turned into a brick by the administrators at sc21.

If your XTS gets turned into a brick by a system administrator than you don't know what you're doing and should go read up on P25.ca. I've been doing this for years on multiple systems and never a problem. Even if you do screw it up and a system admin supposedly bricks your radio it's not hard to fix it.

The difference between a scanner and a handheld radio for TRS, is that the scanner receiver will not have as good performance as a dedicated, single band radio. A scanner front end has to be wide open. The noise floor will be higher, and there will be more IMD. In other words there is a penalty for building a broad band receiver. The amazing thing is that scanners work as well as they do..

Basically, if the CODEC doesn't get clean data from the slicer, it doesn't matter how easy it was to program.

Toward that end, I would really like to see an I/Q display made available on the front panel of most P25 scanners so that we can adjust antennas or locations to optimize reception. It's really hard to do that while listening to the garble coming from a CODEC that doesn't have clean data stream.
