• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I am interested in extracting radio frequency and DPL/PL code information from 2 way radios for programming use. The information should be something like this

Frequency - between 400 - 479.995
Private Line code - 143.2 or similar

Where can I find a portable counter/reader/identifier or something to extract this information from a radio by keying the radio up?

Thanks for any help.

How much money do you want to spend? I ended up using the Close Call feature on my BCD-396 scanner to figure out the frequency and DCS code that was being used at work. If you want a device more specifically aimed at this usage and more likely to work reliably, something like the Optoelectronics Xplorer would work out well. Other options that I can think of increase in price exponentially!

Well, I don't want to spend a ton of money. I have heard that the Uniden SC-230 will capture the info also, but I am not sure. I have also heard that a GY560 will work, but I don't want to buy either without knowing for sure.

If you have possession of the radio and just want to know what is programmed into it, take it to a radio shop and have them read the programming.

If it is not your radio and you can't do the above, then most commercial scanners have find features to locate and identify frequencies and the PL tones. There's tons of info on that in the scanner specific sections here on RR. Scanner enthusiasts have been doing this for years.

What are you planning to program that you need this frequency and PL info?

A little (read lot) more of the specifics would be really helpful here. It's difficult for us to properly help you when you don't give us the whole picture. Give us only part of the story and you're going to get a lot of answers that are way off base.

I have a handheld chinese frequency counter and it has been reliable so far. It can either be used antenna to antenna (touching) or with a jumper. My version does not show ctcss or dpl but they make one that also displays that for transmit.

Look up frequency counter for info. This is the one with ctcss display: http://www.409shop.com/409shop_product.php?id=106753

Mine is the yellow colored one and I picked it up at that store when I was in HK a few years ago.
